Eating after Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hi, I had my revision from lap band to gastric bypass 8 weeks ago and so far I'm down 25lbs but, I've hit a stall AND I never really feel full!! I don't dump, nothing makeshift sick and although I should consider myself blessed- I wish I would dump so that I could stay away from the bad habits/choices that got me here. Anybody out there like me? How do you control your eating? For example: I can eat 8 pieces of sushi without any problem where a friend of mine who also had this done can only do two max!!! What's wrong with me??

When you have the rny gastric bypass it takes time for all your nerve endings to reattach themselves and start working again, so you'll find that you can eat more in the beginning and less eventually. Happened to me about 3 months out or so. You really need to measure your food to avoid getting too much food in.

Everyone dumps on different things. Are you eating stuff that should absolutely make you dump like ice cream etc? My brother (6 years post op) can't look at Peanut Butter without dumping whereas I can without issue

I really hope you are right and these nerves need to hurry up. As for the dumping, I should say that nothing I've eaten so far has caused me to dump, not milk, coffee, a small amount of birthday cake, Peanut Butter so.... I yet to know what that is:(

How do you measure when you eat out?? I go out to eat a lot at lunch and sometimes dinners and I try to eat what I would think is a small portion but I'm comparing it to pre-op!

Thanks for your advise!! I need all the help I can get!

I'm kind of the same way. I can eat a lot. I'm about 7 weeks out. I try to visualize about a 1/2 cup. I used to carry one with me for a reminder (last year on a strict diet) about portion size. It's really hard. You are not alone. I'm always terrified I've stretched my pouch out. I'm just forcing myself to stop eating. I was good last night I did get the over full feeling. Not bad but I was happy to have it.

I had surgery dec 17 and had no full signals until this week and it is finally beginning to happen. I agree about watching what you eat and making sure your entire meal is no more than 1/2 cup. No liquids 30 min before and after eating. I would certainly be careful you don't stretch your pouch/stoma. Talk to your dr too.

I don't really get hunger signals, I have to go by the clock and keep to a set timetable w/meals, Vitamins, and Protein. It's not that rigid depending on what's going on in the day, but without it, I just won't eat. Just not super hungry, yet. Congrats on your surgery, glad to hear that things are going well for you, but I would also advise you to measure portions and eat only that. Remember drinking with meals is not allowed either!

Remember it takes 20 minutes for the full signal to reach the brain. Now w us who are still building nerves we may not get the signal. We need to measure. My Dr said the most successful people measure, even 5 years out. If you know your friend can only eat 2, then stop at 2. Your body will hopefully feel satisfied a while after the 2. But measuring is key.

In the morn, I am hungry most days. This afternoon, I had to go by the clock so that I wouldn't fall short on Proteins or throw the rest of my day off to where I would have to eat too late.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
