I'm going in for my psych eval on Monday. She said she's mailing me a ton of paperwork to fill out and bring back, and the appointment will be about 1.5 hours. What am I going to do for all that time? I'm also nervous because I'm diagnosed bipolar (I've already disclosed it to the surgeons office) and my symptoms are well controlled on my medication. Is this going to be a deterrent to having the surgery?

Thanks,

Renee

It should not be a deterent if you have a clear expectation of what this sugery is, what you need do to make it a success and that it is YOU who wants it and not a spouce, BF, etc. etc. You need to let them know that it takes control, diet, exercise, Portion Control, and that you have to work WITH the surgery for it to be a success. As long as you have a good handle on what this is all about, how you got to be overweight etc. etc and what is required from you there should not be a problem.

I had to complete a form with a ton of questions then we discussed my answers and yes it does take a while.

I was nervous about my psych eval also but he just asked me some questions about myself and my family. If I have a good support system. I answered everything and even though they said my appt would be about 2hrs it was only 40 mins.

I had to do two visits, one was a background type of visit the second was a bunch of questionaires. So maybe yours is all rolled into one. They want to make sure you understand what this is, what is required and the work you have to put in to be successful. I think they also look for eating disorders, abusive / addictive behaviors and if you need extended Psych care. At the end of my visit the doc told me all the things I am okay on and I didn't know she was looking for that.

Don't worry! Best Wishes :)

That is exactly what mine told me she was looking for. She really fixated on the fact I was bulimic in high school and my dad had been an alcoholic. She then drilled me on my 'addictive' behaviors. She also wanted to know about my support system. She even told me at the end that is was not really to look for conditions but to see if you are in the frame of mind to handle all that comes with the surgery. So, if you are fine on medication you should be OK. Good luck to you!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
