hypoglycemic episode

Recommended Posts

Last night I was feeling like I was going to pass out. No longer on diabetic medicines since surgery on 12/4. I checked my blood sugar and found that it was 46. Having had bypass, I was concerned about drinking anythiing with too much "sugar" so I tried some unsweetened applesauce. When that didn't seem to work, I ate a small piece of roast mashed up with broth, no relief......finally I decided to try a "cutie" but instead of swalling the segments I slowly chewed a few segments and spit them out rather than swallowing them. Well, shortly after, I got sick and vomited. Just once and no pain afterwards, but scared me. I guess, I need some advice for "if" that happens again. In the past, I would just drink a little bit of fruit juice but I was afraid this time it would make me sick....LOL I managed to do that in the end anyway! What a doofus! Taking it easy on food today. Pouch seems a little reluctant and grouchy!

definitely just do Clear Liquids for a day or two to give your pouch some rest. if your blood sugar gets to low you can drink fruit juice just oranges this early gets a lot of people sick. but the juice is to be diluted with Water

Thanks, I definitely will remember that for the next time. I keep mostly sugar-free around the house but I buy the grandsons some boxed fruit juices that I'll grab for the next time. Hopefully, continued hypoglycemic episodes won't become an issue because that isn't a good sign either. We had been out doing a lot of walking and although I had fluids with me, I didn't think about food.....not too smart!

There are these new bars called EXTEND. They are not meant for hypoglycemia episodes but they do help to maintain a normal blood sugar level for up to 9 hours. Try those to keep your sugar levels normal.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
