Am I consuming too much?

Recommended Posts

I had RNY 12/27/12....I'm only 4 days post op. I feel like I'm consuming too much. I can drink a whole 8-12 ounces of my Protein Drink in about 20 minutes. I can drink 3-4 16.9 ounces of Water and 4-8 ounces of broth. I'm reading where people can can't even hold an ounce down at a time... I totally feel like I'm over doing it now!

Everyone is different I have felt the same way at times. I'm 4 months post op and I can drink a few gulps of Water sometimes and others I can't. It doesn't mean you have stretched out your stomach I have learned there are things that we are able to have a little more of like water for instance. Be glad that you can because getting your fluids in is a BIG requirement of the surgery.

Hope this helps. Good luck :-)

I was really concerned!

I got an email from my NUT yesterday, and she also confirmed that this was normal.. She said most patients don't start seeing the "issues" until the pureed stage.

You pouch has stretch sensors in it which signal the brain when you're full. Following surgery those sensors are temporarily ineffective during the initial healing process. Nothing to worry about and a blessing in helping you get your Protein and Water intake in. Within a few weeks you'll start getting full on much smaller quantities. Keep in mind that it's important to get ALL of your doctor's recommended protein in every day. Equally important to get as close to 64 oz of water a day as possible. Dehydration can land you back in the hospital in a heartbeat. You're doing great and you're gonna love the new you!!

I am able to eat three average-size boiled eggs in one meal. Is that too much? That is around 270 - 300 calories. It makes a great Breakfast. But is that too much?

Fabulous source of Protein and the calories are fine. Every day for an extended period of time might be a cholesterol concern but if you're anything like me, you'll likely get tired of the same thing every day before it becomes a problem. You're gonna love the new you!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
