My name is melynie and I'm new to this group. I'm 32 years old married with two daughters. My oldest is 13 and youngest is 2. I been struggling with my weight all my life. I've tried different diets and some worked while on diet pills but as soon as I stopped taking diet pills the weight came back with a little extra added. My highest weight have been 330 and that was being pregnant with my youngest daughter. I dropped 30 pounds some months after delivering. I had tons of Fluid. I thought i wanted to have lap band but i dont think i can handle all of the vomiting, stuck food and slipped band everyone talks about. So im weighing my options right now. I'm still in my manditory 6 month weight management class. I graduate from class on feb 14th 2013. I've had my psych eval and my dietician appt. my insurance requires 2 dietician appts. So my last one is scheduled jan 23rd. I have a lot of support from all my fam and friends with which ever surgery I pick. Oh and I'm from Baltimore Maryland.

I think I'm going with gastric bypass. My husband even agrees with my decision. I don't like how the sleeve is permanent. So if something was to go wrong they couldn't reroute everything back. I have a pre-op visit with the surgeon and we will discuss everything. He actually wanted me to have gastric bypass from the start but I just knew the band was going to be for me but not anymore.

Welcome Melynie

I had my lap band removed after seven years and the gastric bypass performed on Dec, 5th, I never had any horror experiences with the band but very little successs either, I wish I had done the gastric bypass to begin with but I thought I knew better, But really I just wasted seven years that I could have been getting healthier, You have just about got the hard parts out of the way jumping through all the hoops the insurance requires and it seems everyone asks something different of us. Wishing you the best. There is a wealth of information and support here so if you have questions or concerns just ask somebody will have an answer. Again Welcome and hoping the next couple of months go quickly for you so you can get on with your journey.

Thanks Vicki! I really think that gastric bypass is the surgery for me and I can't wait to speak with my surgeon in January for my pre-surgical consult before surgery. I'm so excited. What did the pre-op diet consist of? I'm not sure if it's the same as the lap band diet in the beginning.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
