How long has this been happenning? If you suspect it is blood, I would go to an ER immediately to be checked out. Better safe than sorry.

I agree! You'd better get checked out!

As a nurse...I wholeheartedly agree with everyone else!! You could have an internal GI bleed, and this needs immediate medical attention! ASAP!!!!

As a former victim of internal bleeding, I say.....get to the ER ASAP! I almost waited too long....fortunate to be here today.

vomiting blood or coffee-ground like material, is a symptom of gastritis or When vomit is reddish or the color of coffee grounds, it may mean there is serious internal bleeding. The reddish color may be fresh blood and dark blood may be blood that has been digested.

You really need to go to the doctor, I would say ASAP. Good luck and please keep us posted as to the outcome.

Do you have black tar-like stools as well? That is another indicator of Upper GI bleeding.

This is a quote from the Emergency Physcician's Review,

"coffee ground emesis (vomit) contains gross blood that has been coagulated and oxidized by stomach acid and appears as "coffee grounds" floating in stomach aspirate. It usually indicates a signifcant upper GI bleed that has stopped."

The bold and underline is mine. The following is a quote from the following weblink:

http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic3566.htm

Acute gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is a potentially life-threatening abdominal emergency that remains a common cause of hospitalization. The incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is approximately 100 cases per 100,000 population per year (Fallah, 2000). Bleeding from the upper GI tract is approximately 4 times as common as bleeding from the lower GI tract and is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Mortality rates from UGIB are 6-10% overall (Fallah, 2000).

Another thing to keep in mind....while sleeping, it is very easy to aspirate (breathe in to your lungs) the vomit, this can lead to respiratory distress, pneumonia and other respiratory related illnesses.

Go. Go now if you haven't already.

Just so no one panics: I totally agree that this situation should be brought to a doctor's attention as SOON as possible. But residual blood in vomit doesn't always mean a life-threatening emergency is taking place.

I had esophagitis last spring and had two episodes of the coffee-ground thing going on. It sure is scary, I'll say that, but the NP and gastroenterologist I saw about it both said it's not uncommon with the level of irritation I had. No treatment beyond an unfill and Prevacid was called for. Everything was fine.

So don't delay a call your doctor, but don't panic. Just do everything you can to resolve the irritation until you can get a firm diagnosis and treatment. Stay strictly with liquids and avoid anything acidic. Ask for a prescription for the interim that will calm things down.

Good luck, and please let us know how you're doing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
