Six days post-op & having a horrible time getting all my protein.

Recommended Posts

My surgery was last Friday, and I am having no luck with Protein Shakes. It's not that they wont stay down, I haven't had anything come back up yet (thank god), but I just have no interest in drinking anything that isn't clear. I've tried a few different kinds of shakes. I can tolerate the taste of Baricare chocolate, but it's like I just don't want it. It took me an hour and a half to drink 3 oz tonight. I had 4 oz this morning, so I got a total of about 45 grams in today which is my best so far. I'm supposed to get 60. Other than that, today I had 4 oz of applesauce and a lot of Water and propel. I know that isn't enough! How can I make these next two weeks of all-liquids more appetizing? I'm worrying my family to death, but the truth is, I'm just not hungry, nor do I have any interest at all in food. (Except the applesauce. I really love the applesauce.)

Also, one more random question: Why is applesauce okay during the post-op liquid phase, but other fruit smashed up at home isn't? I don't understand why I can't blend some fruit up with my Protein Shakes. That would for sure make them taste better!

Thanks for any advice!

Kayla

Sounds to me like you are doing okay. Staying hydrated is the most important part. Ive never been able to get that much Protein. The best we can do is keep trying everyday

You are doing fine! It took me a few weeks to be able to get in 60 grams. I am almost 6 weeks out and still struggle on some days. Do the best you can and like Michele said stay hydrated!! That is the most important thing right now.

As far as the fruit is concerned, most is too high in sugar or seeds for your new pouch. I had applesauce yesterday and it still made me feel weird. LOL

Good luck to you!!

Your doing fine in the beginning it will be hard to get in all your Protein. All you can do is try a little bit more every now and then. Have you tried Carnation instant Breakfast ( no sugar added) was the best I found.

As for applesauce I don't know I was not allowed to have any but somebody on the forum will have that answer for you.

I'm 5 months post op and I still have times when it's hard to get in all my protein and calories.

Here's something that I learned along the way. What food we used to love does not loves us back after surgery. And what we use to eat a pound of we can now get by on 3 oz.

Got any questions just ask somebody on this forum will answer them for you there are a lot of very smart people that are alive and living because of RNY

Thank you all! I'm doing pretty well with staying hydrated, and I will try the Carnation Instant Breakfast.. If I remember correctly, that's what I had in the hospital and it wasn't bad at all.

Thanks again :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
