Liquid diet...how'd you do?

Recommended Posts

I start my two week liquid diet on New Year's Day. My liquid diet consists of 6 glucerna shakes a day and an endless amount of crystal light and teas and Water. I've had the opportunity to watch my sister do the two week liquid diet over the summer and watched her suffer day in and day out. She did end up losing 15lbs before surgery, but did have 2 minor cheat episodes. She tells me it's hard because you constantly crave something to chew. My goal is to make it through the two weeks with NO slip-ups. I notice on the forum a lot of people end up cheating to some extent.

Is there any of you who were successful and DIDN'T slip up during the liquid diet phase? What was your strategy for success? How did you keep busy? What was the hardest thing?

My goal is to keep busy with work. I plan on really keeping busy with hobbies and focusing on "me" time.

Is it as miserable as my sister is saying? I'm mentally gearing up for it! I am happy to have one last holiday to Celebrate (NYE) before the big day.

Lovealways,

I did the Optifast liquid diet for 2 weeks and did not cheat once. It became a contest with myself. I refused to cheat. I want the surgery to be successful, so I used the diet as a jumping off point. Weekends were harder because more free time, but I did it! I lost 22 pounds in 15 days! I weighed myself every morning and that was motivation to keep me honest. When you lose 7 pounds in the first 3 days, you want to stick to it. The chewing didnt bother me. What was a lifesaver for me was the Optifast diet was 4 shakes during the day and a powdered Soup for dinner. Having the Soup to look forward to really helped. Good Luck!!

Wow!!! 22 pounds! I hope to be as successful as you were. I'm looking at the 2 week diet as a way to challenge myself and prepare myself. What is optifast?

Is it unusual that my doctor has my mother and I doing a low fat diet and not a liquid diet two weeks before surgery? We have to drink 3 Bariatric Advantage shakes a day (can add fruit) and can eat unlimited veggies. I haven't seen anyone else doing this, I only hear about liquid diets.

Optifast is a prescription diet my surgeon requires. It is 4 Protein shakes a day plus a powder Soup for dinner. The taste was fine. I am like you, I kept it as a competition with myself. You can do it! Weigh daily... The weight really does melt away!

I did the 2 week opti-fast shake thing also. I am 1 of the ones that cheated twice. I admit it and "own" it so to speak. That being said, I am now on the 2 week post-op shake diet and haven't cheated once. I get to progress to soft foods on Thursday and I swear to God if I never have to drink another shake after this for the rest of my life I will be a happy women! What helped me with the pre-op diet the most were sugar free popsicles (5 calories I think) and gum. I also would get crystal light & make ice cubes out of them to add to my crystal light drinks and the crunch on ice. It helps with the "chewing cravings". Hope this helps.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
