why keep your surgery private

Recommended Posts

tell me some of the reasons why everybody wants to keep the surgery private?

To me it makes me very excited and I just want everybody to know and just to rub it in there face lol

Well, in my case I am still struggling with the thought that I 'failed' and that's why I needed the surgery. I know that is not really true but it is something I am working on.

Also, some people are just rude and I don't want to deal with it. My close friends, hubby and mom know. None of the rest of the family. They can't keep quite and it's no body else's business.

However, I give you credit if you want to shout it from the roof tops!!

I told a lot of ppl but sometimes I do tend to stay quiet. I'm getting really thin & I'm getting the maybe she is dying look so I'm not saying nothing else.

I'm not keeping it secret. Not exactly shouting it out to the world, but I have no problem telling anyone. It's not something I'm ashamed of, and I've found that a lot of people are interested and start asking questions about it.

I think it is a individual thing. Some people feel great telling everyone and others want to keep it to them selves. I personally, only told a few close friends, my sister and a couple people at work. I think it is totally up to YOU and who YOU want to know.

A good number of people have had it where I work (same hospital where I had surgery) and there have been varying results. I've told some but the grapevine is very active there so I don't really expect privacy. There's a reason soap operas are based in hospitals! Anyway those that have had WLS are continually scrutinized by others especially when in the cafeteria making food choices. People love to watch a train wreck & don't notice the folks who do well. I plan to be in the latter group.

I personally have only told a few people, and wanted to keep it quiet. One of the reasons I decided this was because when I first was going to look into surgery and looked to my friends for support, I had only gotten negative comments in return. I didn't want to deal with those comments when I was going through an already tough decision.

I have heard everything from "you're not big enough" to "you're gonna die on the table" to " you will lose all your friends because people that are fat that are now skinny change their personality and think they are too good for their friends".

However, I have lost a few pants sizes and people notice this..and still talk. But I am more confident in myself and I am trying hard to just ignore the people that say negative things.

I kept it a secret from most people. I finally told my mom once I was pretty close to approval, I told my brother, my best friends, and some family members that in close with. I never and still haven't told anyone at work, some friends, extended family, or people I meet now.

I feel like I kept it a secrete because I to got a lot of negative feedback. Mostly from my mom. It was enough to make me consider who I tell.

Another reason: I personally just felt that it's. One of their buisness! Lol. I mean I'm had this surgery as a tool to help. It's still totally up to me to stick to it and make good choices. Otherwise the weight won't come off and will come

Back on! So I just tell people I exercise and I eat completly differently. Which are both true statements!

Oh and I have gotten messages from people on Facebook who see me out at the bar or dance club I go to every weekend and are so sweet and say I inspire them! Those people are usually overweight so I usually tell them if they ask!

I have told close friends and family. I just didn't want to tell everyone until I was sure it was actually going to happen! Lol. I have told a few more now and I did get the "your gonna die" thing from a co worker. I just laughed and said I'm sure I'm not gonna die.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
