I'm having surgery 12/29 and am having serious doubts. I have lost weight- and put it back on- before, but with all the changes surgery brings- def increasing my walking, aiming for 10k steps a day but haven't made it yet, and changes in diet- have to say I LOVE the Protein shakes- weird I know... I just keep asking myself why surgery? If I just lived and ate like this, wouldn't I lose weight? And I worry about disappointing myself with slower than I thought weight loss. My friend had it and her story of losing more than 100 pounds in less than a year is so inspiring... till I did that math... 8.5 pounds a month. Do I need surgery to lose 8 pounds in a month? I'm 266 and only 5'2. Part of me keeps saying if its so easy why haven't you done it before? I know I'm ready to lose weight NOW. The how is what's bothering me. I guess my questions are 1. how much did you lose and how quickly (I know everyone's different- I just want some examples) 2. How do you feel wls helped you beyond trying to lose without surgery? And 3. For those of you well on the otherside, have you stayed successful? Thanks for the help guys :)

1. how much did you lose and how quickly (I know everyone's different- 84 pounds in 6 months from 211 to 127

2. How do you feel wls helped you beyond trying to lose without surgery? Yes it has help me. I wouldn't had lost weight so quickly with out surgery. With out it I would lose some but put on twice as much.

And 3. For those of you well on the otherside, have you stayed successful? So far I haven't gain not even 1 pound after WLS

Wls has opened up so many opportunities for me. I have rhuematoid arthritis and losing the weight has allowed me to decrease the medication that was causing my weight gain. I have been on steroids for about 6 years and hopefully next year I can come off of them completely. My answer to why be this drastic an have the surgery is simple. With the surgery you still have the cravings you did before, but instead of having to rely on your will power your stomach not only says no - but screams HELL NO! I started where you are 256 at 5'3 and I am down about 85 after 6 months. I feel sexy and confident, and more like a woman ( if that makes any sense).

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
