Ok,i have yet to come across a thread about cigarette smoking! was I the only smoker before surgery? I smoked for 33 years and quit 1 month before surgery. So far I'm doing great and feel I've kicked the habit but it's only been 2 months. I'm wondering if anyone else has quit for the surgery and then started again?

I quit smoking the evening before surgery. I was suppose to quit 2 wks before surgery but could not. I am OK (9 monts post op) but I do miss it at times. I have quit for years and went back for a couple of years then quit again for a number of years...... this time its for good, I can't afford $9.00 / pack anymore !!!! Plus I feel 100% better and can run once again.

I'm so glad you both quit... What a great thing!!! I watched my dad die from lung cancer and it was a horrible thing. I'm sure had he known what cigarettes were doing to him he would have quit. Kudos guys!!!

I quit smoking 5 months prior to surgery. Had to be smoke free for 3 months before they would even consider doing my surgery. I haven't had one urge to smoke since I quit. I figured if I'm putting myself through all of this to get heathy I will do everything to make sure I don't start smoking up again.

That's super! I was told I needed to quit or they wouldn't do surgery...but when it came down to it, no one even questioned if I had quit..but I'm thrilled I have quit and I I'm past wanting one! It was easier than I thought it would be but I give all the credit to chantix..but I'm concerned because now I have started dumping every time I take it and I'm not going to take it anymore...i hope the craving doesn't come back

My program required patients to be smoke free for at least one year. They urine tested at my preop appointment and the day of surgery. My surgeon cancels if they detect anything related to smoking.

Shows they are serious! I expected something like that but nothing! When they called to schedule surgery,i asked them if it was going to matter that I would only be 1 month smoke free..nope as long as I wasn't smoking when I came in! Seriously tho I'm so happy I quit!

I quit like 1 year or more before thinking on WLS. The main reason why I quit was because at age 1 my son was autism. That was a shock for me. Before he turn 2 I decided to quit for him. I decided I want to always be there for him & help him & what good would I be if I was to get cancer & die he would be with out me & no one will love my son more then I do.
