RNY on Monday, 12/10, Scared!

Recommended Posts

New to this forum. After a long process I was approved for surgery and now it is coming fast, less than 3 days away. I am so scared, more scared than I thought I would be. Afraid to die and if I am making the right decision.I went through this process over 2 years ago and changed my mind before scheduling surgery and then regreted it after doing yet another fad diet that failed again.I was doing really good, looking forward to the surgery, but now worried since it is so close. I have 3 young boys who need me, but need me healthy too so that is why I am doing this. I started at 292 and I am now 272, I am 5'11" tall, in my early 30's. Anyone else extremely scared prior to surgery? Any advice? I will continue to read this forum all weekend, so happy I found it :)

I was not worried about the surgery, but my husband was deathly afraid of it. In fact the day of my surgery he threw up several times due to the fear. Just keep in mind your goal. I will be honest with you the first few months are hard months, but they pass and are a distant memory now. Stay strong and find a picture of your heaviest weight and keep it near you. When it is a hard day pull that out!!! We are here if you need anything

My surgery won't be until next month, and throughout the whole process, I promised myself I wouldn't allow myself to get scared the closer it got! Lol of course that didn't work. Now that it's getting closer, I find myself second guessing my decision. I worry about not waking up from the surgerg and I worry I'm making too extreme a decision. I also worry I'll have complications and worry I'll fail and gain the weight back. Many, many thoughts. These thoughts are fleeting...they never get in the way...they are more like passing thoughts. I keep my eye on the prize and try to think positive. I've seen at the weight I am now how my health and life have been negatively affected (I'm 5'4 and 269) and I'm just not going to live like this anymore. I'm too young to be stuck at home ashamed of myself and my body. Second guessing ourselves is normal...it means we're human! This is such a HUGE life transition and we are about to embark on a lifelong journey. Just know how bad you want this and it helps to keep negative thoughts at bay :)

My surgery is Wednesday and yeah, I'm terrified. But I won't allow myself to think about the bad things that could happen because I'm NOT backing out so what is going to happen is going to happen. I have faith in my surgeon and more importantly in my God. So I'm just moving forward each day and keeping a Xanax in my pocket just in case! Lol!

Good luck to you. You're going to be fine!

My surgery is tomorrow as well... When I get scared I just remember how common this procedure is and that allllll the pre op tests, however annoying, were all done to make sure you're a perfect candidate for this procedure! You will do great and I can't wait to hear about your progress good luck to you!!

Hey there! My surgery is tomorrow as well. I think it's normal to be scared. I am as well. But I am more scared of what will happen if I DON'T have the surgery! I don't have any advice for you but wanted to let you know that you are not alone!! What time is your surgery tomorrow?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
