National average surgery goals

Recommended Posts

Damn' date=' if I only lost 60% of my excess weight I would be at 205.2lbs since I started at 276lbs and 158lbs is when my BMI will say I'm at a normal weight. I weigh 169lbs and my goal is 135lbs. That. Is. Nuts.

I agree. Most people it seems are losing more. I guess a lot of peoples progress mayy not have been reported.

I think it's accounting for failed surgeries. Also older people never lose as much

older people don't lose as much? Why not? what is considered older?

Metabolism naturally slows as you get older. It can start to slow as early as in your 30's.

I have heard the same thing, although it was explained to me that the 60% represents the average of where people land over time. You may lose 80% within the first year, but 3 years later....many people gain some and level out.

I can't answer what is considered older but perhaps it would be better stated to say "On average, older people don't lose as much." There are very few absolutes in the business of medicine. I'm sixty-two and although my metabolism may have slowed, I reckon I've done pretty well with my weight loss. It's all about The Prime Directive - lifestyle changes. Understand that, embrace that, commit to that - and nothing can defeat you.

I don't know why. It's that way with it without surgery. By older I mean 50+. No one in my local support group that is older has lost as much as the youngyins like me

My weight right now is 343. My weight should be 128-149. If it will keep me healthy and bring me to a new lifestyle. I'm game. I'm so ready to get rid of 60% of excess.

Me too. We all dream of being skinny, but the real wish is being healthy! I have only lost 40 percent so far in 12 weeks but am in a size 10 and feel great aside from back pain.

I wonder of your medications or health issues also slow down weight loss?

Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

I can attest to that. Depression meds will stall you as well as hormones. Ive had to back off of both due to this

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
