Hello Everyone -- I'm new to this site and this is my first post. Hopefully, I'll learn how to navigate around here and will find where to look for the replies! General info 'bout me....I'm seeking banding on top of bypass and would love to find others who've had both procedures. Main concern is becoming deficient in nutrients and slippage. I've faxed in my op report to Dr. Fielding's office and am waiting to hear back about initial consultation.

On 3/22/04 I had bypass, lost 100, gained 30. I'm around 250 now and am 5'0" tall. I have about 125 more lbs to lose, let alone being terrified of regaining the remaining 70 I lost from bypass. I actually began to stop losing weight about 6 months out from surgery. Surgery/recovery were unremarkable & I was back at work in 3 weeks. Have the usual side effects: occasional dumping, lactose intolerance, gas, pasta's intolerable. Nothing unusual at all for GBP.

Well, that's me in a nut shell.

Thanks for reading,

Welcome to lapband forum. I didn't have my band placed over a bypass but I have heard of that being done with good results. You are very brave to be able to admit you have had difficultly losing after 6 months time with the bypass. I know from what I see there are quite a few people who do gain weight back after bypass. I don't know what the stats are, do you with banding? Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your journey.

Hi Vickie,

Welcome to LBT!

The good news is, you probably won't experience any worse side effects than you have from the GBP.

Hugs and good luck!

Thanks Juliegeraci and ReneBean for the replies. Am told I'll hear back from Dr. Fielding by middle of 2/12 wk as to whether he'll consider me for banding. I sooo hope the doc thinks I'm a good candidate. Fingers crossed!!

Julie -- You mentioned you have heard of pts w/ both procedures w/ good results. Was that on this board?

I've heard there's many pts who are bypassed and banded (b/:) but I can't seem to connect with any of them. Been trying to find them on at least a dozen boards (hence the delay in getting back to this board) and not a single person have I found. If anyone reading this would pass on my info to a b/b pt, I'de be thrilled and very appreciative. Once I am b/b, I'm going to make sure I post same on every board I'm a member so no one has to spend this much time searching. Hey, I might start a b/b group!

A general banding question....When you vomit (I'm assuming banded people do -- this bypassed person most certainly did and still does!) how concerned are you w/ band slippage? The reason I'm asking is b/c during my first consult for a b/b (Dr. Bessler) I understood that was the most significant risk of the procedure (not counting surgery in general). I'm concerned about this b/c even after being almost 3 years post op, I still do vomit. Granted, vomiting post-surgically is very different than it was pre, but I still heave when I eat too much (and, yes, I still do that too) and that could make the band slip.

Thanks everyone. Glad to have found this board. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
