I was/am a soda addict. I was told by my dr that 80 percent of people who gain their weight back is because they go back to soda after surgery. I have not had soda now for a little over three months and my surgery is in about three weeks. I'm glad I had time to get my mind right before surgery. Because for me this all seems to be more mental than physical.

I agree it's more mental then physical.

Oh my! I totally agree! I was 24 days no soda when I decided to have some Christmas Eve. I justified it as, ok just this one glass, it's Christmas and I am months away from surgery. Not to mention II had been craving it so much. I drank it, it tastes terrible. I felt terrible for feeling like I "cheated" and now I keep thinking about how I could justify having another one. Blah!! I want to succeed at this. After surgery I don't want to be thinking like this about soda. I fear I will feel this way about food in general, I want to feel like I can do it because I already have....

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to talk yourself down when this thinking pattern starts?

Kellbell, your story sounds so familiar!! I am almost 3 months post op. I tried soda once- Preop I LIVED for a diet coke. It was so nasty!!! The first thing I tasted was the chemicals! You yourself said it tasted terribly. Why even be tempted anymore? For me, I was still tempted because I knew I was SUPPOSED to love it. I haven't touched the stuff again. I drank at least 4 cans a day preop...in addition to the cups I'd get with drive thru. This feeling will pass. A lot of this surgery is about healing. First physically, then emotionally. Allow yourself the mess up, but OWN the mess up. Talk yourself out of it by remembering how guilty you felt. When I ate something I shouldn't have, I took a pic of myself dumping. Want another soda? Then take a look at that pic...you'll remember why you gave it up!! Good luck!! We are all in this battle together!!

A friend of mine drank soda after surgery and forms ulcers and a hole in her pouch. It could be that plus the ibuprofen as well that she took with soda. I don't drink carbonation as I have always gotten sick from it. I am just afraid I won't like Water after as that's all I drink.

Carbonated beverages are also bad for the teeth.

Sugar can't harm you it justs makes you dump! Which I believe is awful the bubbles/fizz on the other hand you may well be able to handle, but you could do yourself so much damage without knowing it, you could damage/ stretch your new stomach which may make you very ill or affect you loosing weight. I wouldn't risk it just for a fizzy drink :-) x
