4 Years Post-Op

Good Day fellow members.

I'm from Windsor' date=' Canada. I started my journey at 350lbs. I am almost 4 years post-op and RNY has been the best decision of my life.

Wow you look like another person:) congrats...just had surgery 6/21. Today they finally removed jp drain and staples .:) so far it's 10 days and I'm down 17 lbs:) so excited. Feeling a lil hungry and can't seem to drink that Liquid Protein crap:( Hoping this hunger is just in my head cuz I'm sick of Jello and crystal light. Lol. Sorry for venting....

Its just head hunger. It takes a while to get over it. I think it took me like 2-3 months to get over the head hunger. Everytime i walked by the fridge i'd open it and grab something, for no reason at all, just a force of habit. Once you break the habit it gets a little easier.

Im almost 4 yrs out. I eat everything except pasta... makes me dump. I eat about a 1 - 1 1/2 cups of food at a time. I never feel the need to eat' date=' never have hunger pains. I can eat whenever i want and i can drink something the same time i eat unlike right after surgery when it was either drink something or eat something. I do a lot of greek salads, oatmeal, chicken, mashed pot, fruits and veggies (except cucumbers bc i had one get stuck and it was horrible)[/quote']

What does " get stuck" mean? I read another post where someone ate meat & it " got stuck". I'm 2 weeks post op. I'm just trying to learn everything here :)

After surgery eating habits have to change including how much you eat and how big of a bite you take. This is especially the case right after surgery. Getting stuck refers to when you take a big bite of food and not chew it properly. Steak is a good example. If the piece is too big and you dont chew it enough, that piece will go down and get stuck in your pouch, not allowing other food to go down. Most of the time you will throw it back up but sometimes it gets stuck and nees to be removed surgically. Its rare, but it happens. Ive had things stuck. Its not fun. You cant get anything down, not even Water. Its painfull too. Moral of the story, small small bites and chew chew chew

Oh heavens no! It usually either goes down or you throw it up. I got stuck a lot with my band probably every day at least and never needed surgical intervention. My conversion to RNY is so much better.

What does " get stuck" mean? I read another post where someone ate meat & it " got stuck". I'm 2 weeks post op. I'm just trying to learn everything here :)

With me it's tuna that gets stuck. Four times it's happened and three of them with tuna. Your pouch is very small and if you eat too much it backs up to your esophagus causing pain just between and slightly below your breasts and severe nausea. Your body makes saliva to try to help manage the food. A lot of people say they throw up the food but I couldn't (it would have been better if I could but I'm not a puker). I felt very 'gurgly' in my chest and all I could throw up was gobs of bubbly saliva.You get the same effect if you eat bigger bites, even if you chew it well. You get too much, too fast, feeling like it gets stuck. The same if you eat something too dry. My first time (and the worst time) it happened with a little bit of tuna from one of those envelopes - I swear I only ate about two tablespoons. I had 2-3 hours of absolute misery! They say if a food bothers you wait a little while and try it again. So a couple weeks later I tried again, making it moist with mayo, chewing carefully and eating slowly. Nope! No good! More suffering. Today for lunch I gave it another try, making it really, really moist the way my nut suggested, I ate very little, very slowly. Still no good. Sick for two hours at work.

More serious would be if food is REALLY stuck in the new small opening, and not just feeling like it. Large pieces of food, fibrous food, seeds and nuts, hard to digest foods - could all be real trouble. For the most part, following your doctor's instructions will minimize the problems you could have with food

chicken seems to be bad for some people. With others it may be something else. It seems that everyone is different. And just because something makes you sick, it doesn't mean it will always make you sick. It could change.

I'm giving up on tuna, at least for a while. It's a shame because it's a good Protein source.

MOST of the time it works itself down eventually but there are times that you may need sugerical intervention. I have friends that have had to have food removed.

For me, its steak. Steak always seems to get stuck no matter how small i make the piece. Hamburger im fine with, steak and ribs im not.

I dont. Some ppl do. If you take small bites you will be just fine. You have to re-train yourself on eating. Old habits have to change

Wow!! A great transformation. That really motivates me. I'm 3wks post op. Any tips would be great!! I no sometimes its a little different for woman than it is for men,. I lov to tan even tho i'm so big, I can't wait to lose all this junk. Lol congrats!!!

Women should take Biotin. It helps prevent Hair loss. The only suggestion I can give you is to stick to what your surgeon tells you to do. They are the expert. If you have issues dont be afraid to ask them. Dont force food down. Take small small bites and chew chew chew. Getting food stuck is not a good feeling. And most important, enjoy your new life to the fullest

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
