Has anyone had to have the Lovanox shot? and does it hurt? UGH> I am told it hurts like heck to to get that shot in your belly. Anybody have experience with it?

I'll admit it's awkward and a little frightening at first, but the needles are very small and barely hurt at all. I gave them to myself 2x a day for 7 days. I was taught to wipe an area on my lower tummy with an alcohol swab, pinch an inch (or two ;] ) and just stick the needle in then push in the plunger until the medicine is emptied out. Then all you have to do is remove the needle from your skin and push down on the plunger to enclose the needle prior to disposing of it.

You won't even need a bandaid, but you will need to do it in different spots each time, and have some kind of container on hand for disposal.

I second everything the last poster said....it's really easy to do and trust me I hate needles and shots but you barely feel it!

Surgery is in less than 18 hours (Jan 21 @ 8am)! :D Lots of ups and downs since I started this long journey in 2008. I joined this group April 2012 when I originally thought I was "approved" but later found out I was actually denied (insurance mix-up). After some hard work and determination, my appeal to the insurance companies (primary/secondary) was approved! If it wasn't for this online support group and MyFitnessPal, along with some very close friends, family, and my partner, I'm not sure how I would have made it so far. Achieving my weight loss goal will be easier than maintaining. That's my longterm focus - staying at or closely around my goal weight. I struggled ever since college - 10 years of undergrad, grad, and doctoral studies came with a sedentary, stressed life with nothing but carbs and fat, and the occasional up-and-down dieting. Patterns learned long ago in childhood and adolescence were reinforced as I continued down a path of self-destruction. That continued through adulthood... Lots of learning has occurred in the past years, but now I'm REALLY learning and DOING... "Knowledge is no guarantee of good behavior, but ignorance is a virtual guarantee of bad behavior" (Martha Nussbaum, 2010). I will need to continue learning, but also recognize that knowledge (while important) needs to coincide with consistent, reflective action.

For me, I believe exercise is going to be key along with therapy and conscious, healthy eating. RNYTALK.COM and MFP are going to be there every step of the way.

I'll post tomorrow morning my pre-surgery weight and some pics from the journey :)

Good luck to you on your journey! Remember, it's not easy, will be tough at times, but once that weight comes off and you start feeling better, you will be amazed at your inner and outer strength :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
