December 2012 Post Op Group

Recommended Posts

's a I have periods when I feel the same. I think its gas pain. But heres question I NEVER thought I would ask...When should I expect to be able to go to the bathroom? I can pee but thats all. I even started chewable Fiber w/ Calcium pills today to try and help things along...

Cuz we are on mainly liquids, hardly anything builds up in our bowels. My Dr recommended some milk of Magnesia. But he said he would also suggest a suppository first to see if that will work instead of MoM for the first couple weeks. I used a suppository the other day cuz it had been 6 days, (this will b TMI) but hardly anything was released. If you feel pain is cuz you can go then try a glycerin suppository.

I truly think you'll like it. I've heard from others it is good in Jello but I haven't tried it. There is a large list of potential uses for unjury's unflavored Protein. I got it to help meet my protein requirements while getting in the fluids. What a great 2 in 1!!!

I went almost 2 weeks before I had a bm. My dr suggested a little hot toddy consisting of 1-2 tbs of milk of magnesia, 1 tbs of prune juice (I used apple), heat it up and chug it! I took it around 5 pm and the next morning everything was moving! Hope it works for you!

Hmmm' date=' I has surgery on 12/17 and only had a hint at full the day I had my first Protein Drink. I can consume several large gulps of liquid and still no full feeling. Everything I'm drinking is pretty thin liquid. Is this typical?[/quote']

I can drink several large gulps too. I'm hoping this is typical because I can't help it! I'm thirsty!! I can eat one whole container of yogurt now when before I could only eat half and I really hope I am not stretching my pouch out! :( What do you think?

How are you doing? I had mine same day in Boston. Sore but hanging in there.

I am sore but just taking occasional Tylenol. I walked 30 min. Today which led me to an afternoon nap. It's amazing how many changes are taking place!

I was doing some reading yesterday. What I had read is that at the point we're at it is rather hard to stretch the pouch. The reason being is the liquids basically just slide right thru which is why we have to wait after eating before drinking. Plus I was actually doing some logical thinking, woohoo, and I would think we might rip stitches with too much stretching. That would Only seem logical and on liquids virtually sliding right on thru non stop not much of a build up to stretch. Cuz again if we didn't wait after eAting the Water would wash everything thru. Now once we are eating more solid, non pureed, whole foods like steak, I can see stretching being a little easier. Does that make sense? It did to me so hopefully those who have a post op follow up soon could maybe ask your Dr.

Now with that being said, don't eat n eat n eat. I just think as we get rid of the gas and pain our intake is higher which is why we have to have at least 60g of Protein n at least 64oz of water cuz the pouch can do it and not stretch.

That does make sense! I was wondering cause it seems like I can eat more and more with no ill effects and it was worrying me! Also, thank you for the reminder about not drinking 30 mins before and 30 mins after a meal. It's not really a biggie now so much I guess cause all we are able to do is drink really but in the next stages and beyond, that is definitely gonna be key! I go to my doc and nut tomorrow, so I am gonna mention this and I'll let you know what they say too. Thanks!! :)

It is a lot of info.

Got a ? for everybody. The insertion point by my belly button is still quite sore. Is this a consensus here. I'm a week post op.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
