I'm Pre-Op..what Do I Need To Stock Up On Before Surgery?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for 12/12/12...what do I need to make sure to go out and buy before my surgery and have stocked in my house so I can avoid a big trip to the store post-op...Any suggestions are welcome...anything from foods (liquids) I should get, comfort items, supplements..etc. Any pointers on things that helped y'all survive the liquid/pureed diet (my surgeon wants on pureed diet for 8 weeks post-op) so any tips on what you found to offer a better variety from the run-of-the-mill Protein Shakes would be greatly appreciated. Especially ideas for something for a more 'savory' type pureed food, because I imagine I'll tire quickly of the fruity/sweet Protein shake flavors...

Any insight is greatly appreciated, since I don't have any close personal friends or family who have gone through this before...

Thanks!!

well SF popcicles are a must!!! cream Soups like Campbell's cheese and broccoli was really good along with cream of chicken and your low-fat cottage cheese. if you don't have to do a bowel prep I would suggest Miralax and suppositories and gas x strips or chewables.< /p>

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup is a must. It's clear and pretty good. So is their strawberry blast and unflavored. Unflavored is good for any regular food you strain like Soup.

Popsicles are a life line!!

I have g2 low cal for electrolytes.

Cream of wheat (can be made very thin for liquid stage). It's nice for a change.

Decaf tea. Right now I'm having lemon zinger. :)

I bought little Pyrex "shot glasses" they are 1.44 at Walmart and are great for Portion Control since your pouch is wacked.

Small tupperware for all the leftovers. :-).

I would stock up on the "heavy" items unless you have someone to carry them for you after surgery. Be careful on stocking up on too much stuff because my taste changed big time after surgery. I use to love crystal light now I can't stand it, the same with Wylers peach green tea, it taste like chemicals. I would stock up on bottled waters (16.9 oz) size. You will need to drink 4 a day to get your Water in not including the Protein. Try a couple of different Proteins, see what one you like the most then buy a big container of it. I like Isopure, I bought the 7.5 lb. tub of it. I also stocked up on Soups, I still like the same ones as I did before surgery so that is a good thing. Also stock up on vitimans, I found the chewable kind were easier to get down for the first few months. I could not handle the larger pills they hurt way too much plus caused me to throw up too :( sorry TMI.

Thanks so much Ladies, this is a huge help! Much appreciated :) These ideas are super helpful..

@worm2872 -- I love your shot glass idea, how clever...definitely hopping on that wagon. Also, where do you buy your unjury? Do you order it online or have you found store that sells it?

Thanks so much, this is great. I am making my shopping list right now!!!!

I believe powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury is only available online - www.unjury.com. I just bought the starter pack that came with a nice sample of their flavors. I thought it was a great way to try each of them to see what I like and what I don't before I invest in a ton of it. Unjury came highly recommended by my RNY support group.

Loooove Unjury. I too ordered the starter kit. The vanilla is outright delicious when made with skim milk. I like chocolate splendor too.

I've also been wondering the same things, right now I'm searching for the supplements they want you to take, B12, Calcium, vitD, and multivitamins...what are the best ones to take as far as taste and absorbtion and cost-effectiveness ?!?! thanks for any advice :)

I just take 2 Flintstones complete daily. that's what surgeon recommends. also Biotin 5000 mgs. Calcium cannot be calcium carbonate. I am personally going to do b-12 shots once a month instead of taking another pill

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
