Ready, Set, Go! Surgery Date 1/7/13- Still Preparing...

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am new on here, and really like this site- what a resource! I'm trying to get all the necessary items I need. This is getting expensive, but I'm not whining :) Please wish me well. Never stayed in hospital, just trying not to get the creeps either.

Hi,

I just had my surgery on 10.16.12 so I am about 5 weeks out. It was a blessing that I did not have anyone telling what to buy as I would have spent it on things I did not need. However saying this I have purchased some food items as I move along. The ONLY thing I would get is a small fork, knife, and spoon. Buy some cheap baby spoons. I bought the use and toss but don't toss just wash them in the dishwasher. I also purchase small custard bowls. You can't drink and eat at the same time so maybe you should not buy small glasses. Okay You have desert plates, your little spoons and a small set of utencils. That was all I needed. I call it my Barbie dinnerware.

Because you do not drink a 1/2 hour before and after I would suggest you use a regular glass but REMEMBER to SIP, SIP,SIP! No big hits of Fluid. I found it very uncomfortable to take a large drink of liquid. So I sip all day long. I check my skin to make sure I am not dehydrated, and watch the color of your urine. If it is dark you are dehydrated. Urine should be almost clear if not a very pale yellow. Maybe this is TMI. I wish you well, and no matter what you will be pleased with your choice. Take care Dorian from New Mexico USA!!!

Make sure you have good distractions for the hospital, such as a book, etc.

I have been starting to prepare for surgery as well. Mine is in about 4 weeks. I know people say not to stock up on a lot. But I know I need Vitamins and clear fluids and a lot of them. So I am going to bargain shop for my Vitamins. We will need them forever, so there's no harm in getting a healthy supply started.

Make sure you've got either bottled Water or a reusable Water container with ounces marked, so you know how much you're drinking. sugar free popsicles and Jello, etc.

For kitchen stuff, make sure you have measuring cups, a food scale, a food processor/blender, a Blender Bottle if you will be drinking Protein on the go or want more convenience, and maybe the small snack size tupperware containers to store meal servings.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
