Feeling Sad And Scared

Recommended Posts

I'm three and a half weeks post op and I had my first bout of Dumping Syndrome yesterday. I felt horrible, and even though I'd read about it, it was much worse than I ever expected. Today I'm still feeling sluggish and not at all like myself. I'm crying because I don't know if I made the right decision or not. I'm scared because I just don't feel like myself and I'm scared to eat for fear of starting the nausea and pain all over again. Can someone please give me some encouragement and advice?

Hang in there honey. You know what caused you to dump.. Now stay away from it. I would encourage you to just stay on liquids today to keep your strength up and just to coat your pouch. You will feel better tomorrow... I promise. You made the right decision.. You just know you have to be really careful with what you eat. Hugs your way!!

I am sorry to hear you are having a hard time. I am only 8 days out and dumping scares me the most. How did you know that is what it was and was it a good you expected could cause dumping? I am so worried about it being a newbie like you. I hope you feel better soon. Stay strong. You made the right choice. I think it is a learning process for everyone in the beginning.

Thank you, kristy3k! I guess I just needed someone with more experience to reassure me that things will get better. I'm having a down day - seems like I can't stop crying. I was doing so well for the first few weeks, that I guess I just got a bit too confident.

Eeyoregirl1970 - it was bread. As I said above, I was doing so well that I decided to try part of a sandwich. Had nausea, diarrhea, and stomach cramps for a day. A friend who had the surgery several years ago said that bread gets stuck easily, and then every time you drink, it swells. Feeling better physically this morning, but just nervous about eating again. Kind of emotional. I'm down 30 pounds and my blood pressure is better than it!s ever been, so I know I made the right decision. Just kinda got a jolt of reality! Hope that you continue to do well!

Most of us go thru this at some point in time so don't be so hard on yourself but learn from your bad expierence. I have dumped a few times, I am 7 months post op and I dumped not because of eating high fat or surgar foods but I dumped because I was not chewing my food well at first. I learned real quick that I had to chew, chew, chew, chew. I would be sick for a day or so, my surgeon would tell me to go back to the liquid stage for a few days then slowly go back to the stage I was in. You can't go back now so make the best of what you have, think positive and you will find you spot in this RNY world, you are still very new at this, each of us had to find our way and what works best for each individual, it is also thru trial and error where we all learned. Don't put yourself thru the ringer its not necessary !!! Just live and learn, because we all go thru it. Stay strong !

Well the good news is - the surgery worked!!! Yeahhh!!! Lol. It was probably a little to early to try bread unless your doctor gave you clearance. Im at 5 months out and I can not eat any bread, noodles etc... After you dump, just make sure you drink lots of fluids.

This thought always helps me: "This, too, shall pass." A certain feeling state is likely to change. I try to remind myself when feeling the blues.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
