Hi. Im new here. I was at my dr today and due to me significant reflux he recommended bypass surgery. I had initially decided on the sleeve and focused all my research there. So i am here to learn about the ups and downs and ins and outs of bypass surgery from those who know best. You !

I was going with the sleeve as well and only look into that and changed it to the bypass at the last minute so I know how you feel. I felt like I wasn't as prepared as I was for the sleeve but it's pretty simple and about the same risks as the sleeve. You shouldn't have any problems as long as you take all your vitamines and make sure you get your blood work done on a regular basis to make sure all your levels are ok. You get dumping with the bypass which you don't get with the sleeve. The bypass is reversable and the sleeve is not. My doc told me that the percentage of keeping the weight off with the bypass is 70% and it was only like 35% with the sleeve. Also you don't always lose as much with the sleeve as with the bypass. I think everything else is basically the same with them both. food restriction and you can't drink and eat at the same time. Just have to take like 1 more vitamine.

Welcome Shakin....you'll find lots of information here but, there is a lot out there on the internet - good and bad. Keep an open mind, do your research, ask your doc questions then you'll be able to make the best decision for you!

Welcome to the boards!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
