Egd Procedure - How Bad Is It?

Recommended Posts

I'm going through the list of procedures that I will need to have done, should I be approved for RNY. Just the thought of being only halfway sedated and knowing they're sticking this tube down my throat is giving me anxiety. Even more anxiety than the actual surgery! LOL

is it really as bad as it sounds?

It's not bad. I just had mine done last Thursday. They put you to sleep. The procedure itself is only 20 mins. When I woke up I couldn't feel any pain. Just had a sensation to cough, but they gave me some 7-up for that.

ok so i am weird. the EDG and a colonscopy i actually like having them. Love that twilight sleep, didnt feel anything with either. they gave me a little something to make me feel giddy before the EDG and i was talking crazy and had the surgeon and the others laughing before they put me under.

its a very small dose and you feel nothing, it will not be the same stuff as they will give you for the actual surgery.

i have had 2 scopes of each and never had any problems with either or felt any pain. these are test i dont mine doing

Thank you so much, everyone! I feel much better now. :) I vaguely remember that my dad had this procedure done. One minute his throat was scratchy and hoarse, and the next he was chowing down on Breakfast. LOL

You won't feel or remember a thing! You're knocked out in 2 seconds :) I ate and went to class 3 hours after!

I was so worried about it too! It was so simple. Hardest part was waiting in the bed in the hospital room.

Doctor was about 45 minutes behind as it is so that was the only hard part.

Once I got into the surgery room, they made me lay on my left side, made me gargle this nasty nasty nasty awful stuff. Then had to swallow this huge 2 tablespoon stuff, was the consistency of honey. That was the worst part. I dont remember anything, I was out like a light. Woke up in recovery and was fine. Just felt high from the drugs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
