Scared And Second Guessing For First Time

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I could use a little encouragement. I'm self-pay and have been flying through the process to have the gastric sleeve. I was totally jazzed and not scared at all. Skip to Friday when I meet with the surgeon and he tells me that my BMI is too high for the sleeve and he really suggests the RNY. We discussed it at great length and I KNOW he's right. I KNOW he is. But I'm starting to second guess surgery all together. I'm mostly afraid of complications and death. But I"m also afraid of dying from a heart attack in my 30's due to my weight. So yeah. Just having an off day and need some encouragement.

Also, as a side note.... the Bariatric Advantage pre-op Vitamins are TEARING up my stomach, anyone else?

I'm 32 and just had RNY on 10/23. My BMI was 52. When I decided to have surgery-I found the best surgeon I could in our area-and after meeting him had pure trust in his ability. I only discussed RNY and knew if I was gonna do this I had to listen to him and trust him. Good Luck!

I had originally gone to my surgeon wanting the band. When he told me I should go for the rny, I freaked for awhile. For that reason and many others, I put off going through the insurance process for an entire year. In the time I waited until my surgery, I gained an additional 20 pounds. I had my rny 10/4/12, and have lost 30 lbs. I have to admit that I kick myself a little because I keep thinking I'd be 20 pounds closer to my goal if I hadn't waited, and really, I would be at my goal weight by now. I'm 27, and I just didn't want to die young due to something I could prevent. It's terrifying to take that step, but it's worth it. I'm already feeling more confident and it's only going to get better! You can do it!

Thank you all so much. I have researched for SEVEN years and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I've chosen the best surgeon possible. His practice is a bariatric center of excellence and he fellowship trained for bariatric surgery for 2 years at Duke university. So I'm good there. It's just my crazy anxiety. (I take meds for it... it's out of hand) Good thing I told my husband back before I got scared "Look, I'm going to freak out at some point... I don't know when, but do NOT let me back out" and so far he isn't.

Hang in there jodi! Rnytalk is a wonderful way to get the information you need. Praying over your situation for you.

You will be fine.. opportunities like this don't present themselves for no reason at all. Remember there's nothing like the power of praying hands... Just give it to Him and forget about it! ;)

You all are saying exactly the things I needed to hear! If nothing else, I"ve gotten 100x more support here than I did on Lap-band talk (a few years and several pounds ago) or Vertical Sleeve Talk!

I definitely just need to pray and hand it over to God. NorthwestBeauty, I LOVE the scripture in your signature, how perfect for my situation!

I see you chose Dr. Josh Roller!! Awesome choice!

I decided on Dr. John Baker in Little Rock..! I live in Southeast Arkansas so it was a given that I went with him.. I was very comfortable with his advice. He's actually a teacher/trainer in laparoscopy right here in arkansas... many bariatric surgeons from different regions come to train with him. Aside from researching him in general, I have to say that was the MAIN reason I chose him...

You are absolutely right about the support on this site. I was considering the sleeve until I found out that my insurance does not cover so I am going with the RNY. RNY has been performed longer than any other surgery with excellent success rates. Everyone I have read about only regret not doing it earlier! I have my sixth doctor visit this month then surgery next month. My advice, follow doctor orders before and after surgery 100% and you will do great. Looking forward to hearing about your progress. Don't feel bad about struggling with your decision for seven years. My best friend had hers done 10 years ago and has been encouraging me to do it since then! You can do it and we will be here to support you along the way. Christi

Freaking out is normal! This is major elective surgery! I ran the whole gambit of emotion prior to surgery. It was the best decision I ever made. Follow directions and you will be fine. I had rny for 2 main reasons. No lap band because I have had mrsa in the past...my orthopedic said no foreign objects in my body. I went with rny because of the history of success with this procedure. Hang in there.

You will be fine ;) I had mine in September, I am 28, weighed 364 lbs and my BMI was in the 50's. All I thought about was death but it is very rare. Today I am 292 and have lost 31% of my body weight and I'm only 6 weeks post op. I feel great and am so glad I did this. Don't psych yourself out, this surgery is life changing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
