What is PB's???

Recommended Posts

I'm fairly new to the site, not banded yet (Feb 22nd), and I keep seeing "PB's" everywhere and can't figure out what the heck it means. Can someone please explain it to me? From the way it sounds I don't want to have PB's, I'm assuming it's a bad thing. :)

From what I'm told its a productive burp - when you eat alittle too much and some needs to come back up. But I've never had it happen to me so I'm not really the best one to be telling.

Thats exactly what it is and until this past Saturday it had not happened to me. It was horrible, but just like I heard of another bandster, the band was letting me know who's boss. Make sure and chew your food to mush and slow down. You'll be fine.

I agree with the others' descriptions, but for me I don't find it that horrible. It's the food you just ate coming back up, before it has mixed with digestive juices. So, to me, it is not nearly as awful as actual vomiting. Other people feel that it is pretty much the same as vomiting. In any event, it can be bad for the band and it is to be avoided as much as possible.

I find it not quite as bad as vomiting, but pretty close. And I am not too happy for a while afterward. It usually happens when I eat too fast. I apparently really snarf my food. Also in the mornings, it is worse, although it has happened to me at lunch as well.

I think it is a fairly serious event, not in happening once, but as an occurrence that happens on a regular or semi-regular basis.

There is also sliming, which for me is when I throw up slime. No food, just slime.

I PB a lot since I got my band filled to 4.5 cc. I eat too fast or don't chew enough, and I have a PB. There is also sliming. I spit up a lot of slime before finally throwing up whatever I have eaten in the wrong manner. I think the slim is the esophagus trying to get things down, so it produces mucus to help food slide down. If I do as TOM says, and cut food in chiclet size, I don't PB. I can't eat in the morning, so I drink a Protein Shake and wait until about 2 to eat solid food. After that I can eat pretty well. When I get closer to my goal weight, I intend to have 1/2 cc removed from my band so I won't PB. At 4 cc, I can eat bread and everything! At 4.5 cc, I can't, and I have to chew each bite about 30 times to make it more or less liquid. But sometimes I PB even then. Because PBs are esophageal spasms, the food tastes just the same coming up as it did going down. It's not like vomiting stuff up with stomach acid in it. I think PBs may be associated with stress because when I'm really stressed out, I tend to PB more than when I'm relaxed. Hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
