Does Anyone Else Feel Like They'll Never Be "skinny"?

Recommended Posts

I wanted to reply to a few issues brought up in this thread, if possible. Sorry if it comes across preachy ~ that is not my intent. I am not even six months out and I try to only speak to my own experience. So here goes ~

I never set a goal weight - that didn't stop the dietician from setting one for me. I'm 12 lbs from that goal. I am not at all scale obsessed. I was for the first two weeks, but stopped myself. Then I only weighed myself on Wednesdays because my surgery was on a Wednesday. Work on feeling healthy - let that be your goal.

On another note, my surgical PA told me at my last pre-op appointment before RNY (5/31/12) these words: "Listen Honey, you ain't never going to be skinny." I worried about responding the way I normally would (not just to the degrading, condescending and offensive comment but to her use of the word 'ain't') because it was my LAST pre-op visit and I didn't want to jeopardize RNY.

I had another follow up with her last Tuesday. This time post-op after having my gallbladder removed (cholecystectomy.). I went in wearing my new size 6 "super skinny jeans" and a gorgeous top & adorable wedges. I felt good - really good, but not because of my clothes or my facade in any way. I was ready for whatever she might say. This time she told me that even though I'm only (nearly) 6 mos post RNY, she could not remember my "fat face." She went on to tell me that I looked amazing and she didn't want me to lose another ounce. She said I looked amazing - my response: "Not bad for a girl who ain't never going to be skinny."

My point in this long response is to advise that you ignore the naysayers - even if YOU are one of them. We are all works in progress. Take it day by day, hour by hour, sip by sip - whichever applies to your current state. This is an ENTIRE lifestyle change. An ENTIRE mental shift. Ease up on yourselves - there are plenty naysayers so you don't need to be one too.

To those who have had a 'frozen scale' - increase Protein (if not solids, then shakes or SF Carnation Instant B'fast) & increase fluids. You've heard this before, ad nauseum, but it works. We have all had a frozen scale at one point or another. Anyone who says otherwise is lying. Period. I worked myself into a panic the first few times on here. Swore everyone was losing faster, more, better. Also was convinced, from time to time, that I would remain heavy - statistical fallout in my brain! Don't get sucked into that ~ it's hard to resist, but try hard.

Remember, baby steps.

These are wonderful observations! Thank you. I do not find them preach at all.

I feel that I will get their but that I have a long way to go. My weight is coming off slowly which I am totally ok with. I feel a lot better that I did pre op.. My size 20 jeans are about to fall off of me even with a belt on.

I was having a conversation with me bf and she had rny about two years ago. She's in a size 8 but has really skinny legs and arms. She is an apple. I am a pear. She can't comprehend I will probably never wear skinny jeans like hers. Just different body types. Eons ago I was an eight and couldn't wear them. No big deal to me but something Ill have to deal with.

Anyone even the biggest girl can wear skinny jeans. The 1st time I wore skinny jeans I was a size 16. I was rocking them with my fat body. I look good in them too. My daughter thought so. Now I look better in size 4 :)

I don't know how 'skinny' I will wind and up. I have curves I always have had them. I was a 36c in seventh grade. I was told I was fat. The reality was I was where I was supposed to weight wise. I was surrounded by girls who still looked like boys. My goal is a healthy BMI not a # on the scale. I am having a fat week this week. Aunt Flow is visiting. Lol. This too shall pass. The reality is my clothes are smaller and I am smaller.

Actually I really can't wear skinny jeans. I'm very heavy in the thighs and knees. I have to buy two sizes bigger to get them past my knees and then then fall down at the waist. It's not that I won't I really can't with out paying a bunch in alterations. This has been when I'm a size 8 or 18. I can't wear pencil skirts either. It's just my body type.

I so get that worm! I am pear shaped and cannot wear anything that straight! Fits the hip too big up top...fit the top and I can look like a stuffed sausage! I love flowy girl dresses anyway! Softer and more flattering to my shape.

Yes, like turtlenecks - they look different depending on you neck, torso etc... I understand. I could squeeze all my weight into my jeans at size 20, but any dresses above the knees showing my thighs was a nightmare.

I know what you mean. I've had big thighs forever and they can ruin an outfit quick. Id prob be a size 10 right now if it wasn't for them

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
