New To The Crew_Rny On 10-30-12

Recommended Posts

I just had the traditional bypass on 10-30-12. I am a 41 year old African American male from the Philadelphia area. The first three days since the surgery have been filled with adjustments and discomfort but I am still excited about the whole process. I'm on my way home. I'm sipping away. I started this journey over a year ago. I can't believe I followed through! Are there any other 10-30-12 folks out there?

Oct 15th, cool. You are well into the flow of this thng now. Special note: The first thing I noticed since i've come home is that the bed and chairs at the hospital were uncomfortable...I have not experienced the same discomfort since I've been home...(I was not on the regular recovery floor due to my sleep apnea.) It gave me the impression that the first few days after surgery are rough, but that may not be the case...I'm doing fine now!

I am new to the site today and I have no idea what I am doing! I had surgery on September 11th, but my recovery is very slow. I hope that this finds you in good spirits and you continue to feel better at the comfort of your own home.

That's good. I don't think hospitals want you to be comfortable lol. How are you doing on your Protein and fluids?

When u say slow, what do you mean? Are you still experiencing some discomfort? You should be beyond liquids-only and consuming solid foods by now. I'm feeling pretty good. I took a nice little walk this morning. Everything is on schedule, I guess.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
