The start of my journey began about two years ago. I started having bad stomach issue where they pain was getting bad. At frist the doctor thought it was my meds. Then they thought it was milk and other foods. Then moved on to stress and work related. I know none of them will admit it but I believe some even thought I was making it up. Very time I ate no matter what I ate I was in pain. I went in for a test where they have the machine watch me eat an egg sandwich. My egg sandwich did not move at all from my stomach. After four hours the guy giving the test sent me home and send it is not going any where. So then I was told that I have Gastroparesis really bad. They sent me to doctor Duperier in San Antonio hoping he would do the gastrectomy (which is just like the by-pass surgery). He gave me two choices which were I could have a machine put into my stomach every time I eat I get to push a button that would send an electric shock to my stomach or I could do the gastrectomy.

Well at that first appointment he could not get over that I had a BMI of 65 and that I was under 35 years old. He told me that I need to loose weight and get off my pain meds. I had to say that eatting was never a problem for me. Once the pain hit take a pain pill eat as much and whatever I wanted then go to bed. Made life boring however I could do something good. Doctor Duperier said that a lot of people who have gastroparesis were unable to eat. I felt really bad for those people because that means they did not have has good of pain pills has I did.

So I got with Jodi (Doctor Duperier's Dietitain) and went over my diet and Portion Control. I also had to stop the pain meds which was harder than the diet and portion control but in the long run help with it because when I was in so much pain I could not eat. I lose right around 40 pounds before surgery and drop my BMI to 55.

I did have surgery on October 15, 2012. So far so good. just welcoming soft protien food into my diet now. The only problem I have is I need to burp and can't. I am walking every day. I am almost will to try again to have a good burp. I think that if I could make the walls shake I would cry out in pure joy. So I joy RNY to meet different people and get idea for issues as they come up. I would love to get any ideas on how to burp and/or anyone else who did the surgery for gastroparesis.

Thanks,

Cheryl

Walking worked for me but at first it felt like I was going to throw up till I learned that it was just gas.

Did the doctors put you on a Acid blocker if not this may help you not make acid which makes gas ???

Talk to you doctor and tell him what's going on he should be able to help.

And it will pass.

Congrats on taking the big step to better health in time you are going to love the way you look

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
