Unable To Buy Food I Need

Recommended Posts

So I am 7 weeks post op and really short on money due to having surgery and not having short term disability. I have been unable to buy the food I need for everyday eating. We have enough food to survive but not able to accommodate to the food I need right now. I have a 3 year old and 10 year old so food for them comes first but that leaves me with not to many choices like I buy 2 % milk for them but am suppose to have skim but don't have money for both that goes for all the other foods to. Like yogurt I need the sugar free kind but that leaves no yogurt for the kids, I am trying to stay positive but I have been missing a lot of work due to just being so exhausted so money is so tight, I am lucky to have enough gas money to drive to work which is an hour away. I been doing my best but just feeling kinda down.

I saw my Dr and dietitian my doc had nothing but good thing to say but my dietitian said I think you should be working out more. I work out on my days off for a hour or so and the days I work they are 14 hour days so I literally don't have the time to work out on those days, her saying that made me kinda wanna be like poo on you I won't work out at all then.

I know there isn't much I can do until I start working all my hours and getting paid like I am used to, just kinda feel like I am between a rock and a hard place.

Back to the food thing I figure I will eat what I can until I can afford what I need, just make the best choices I can.

NurseTAB.....You don't have to have fat free yogurt or milk....why not 1%? Greek yogurt is best for everyone but, again..why not regular low fat yogurt but, add some Protein powder to it? You can get pure Protein at Walmart in a big jug for about $20 and that will last you quite a while if you add it to other foods. Add it to foods that don't have all the protein you need but, by adding some of it you get the protein level up higher. Natural Peanut Butter vs regular peanut butter...you're kids probably won't realize it. There are newer brands that don't separate as much that you can use.

Eating healthy is expensive but, you should be able compromise on things that will fall between what your diet requires and what the kids like or require. Heck even mixing them together would help stretch it out.. I've found for me making Soups stretches the dollar for my family, fills us up and I get protein in easy that way. Beans are another great resource for protein and added to Soups help bulk them up. I hope this helps a bit. Hope you're feeling stronger soon!

Wow! That was great information. I have learned so much today. I have two small children too and didn't consider that I would need different food. My kids are so picky though. Why is Greek yogurt best? I was totally disappointed with my dietician. I got very little info and she hasn't answered my emails.

I read somewhere that if you stop losing weight, to go back to the Protein drinks. Any truth to that?

I'm so excited! This was very helpful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
