3 Weeks Post-Op ...weight Gain?!

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks post-op & have lost a total of 11 lbs since DOS. When I weighed this morning I had gained 2 lbs. What can I do to get this weight headed in the loser's direction & not gain any? I must be doing something wrong. I thought the weight was easier to lose in the beginning?

It is probably just Water or maybe related to your hormonal cycle. I'm a little more than 3 weeks out, and my loss has slowed down dramatically. We have to consider the shock our bodies are going through. For me, I have been struggling to get my Protein in, and it's getting chilly in Indiana, so I haven't been doing as much walking. Examine what you can do better, but don't beat yourself up, and remember we will have plateaus. :) I hope this helps!

This is extremely typical! I went through this and actually at almost 5 months out I still go up and down in the weight. At your stage it is probably due to many factors, one being that your body is still healing from surgery and is fighting the weight loss. It is in shock and eventually that stops and weight starts to drop. I had an over 2 week stall at that point. I now get stalls every few weeks but on average lose 2 to 3 pounds a week. As soon as you are cleared be sure to start exercising, but at this point you should be able to be walking, so do that as much as possible. Get in enough Protein (which is hard at this stage as well), Water, sleep and calories (which at this stage is very little). As long as you are following instructions there is no way you will not start losing again. make sure you measure your body, because sometimes when you are in a stall you are losing inches and seeing that change helps with dealing with the stalls. Be patient, this is not a short term race but one that will last a long time. IN 4 to 5 months you will be amazed at where you are and forget these early day frustrations.

Thank you for for posting as well. i am 3 weeks out. Lost 10# by the first POV then nothing for the past 10 days. Grrrrrr.

Im struggling with getting the fluids in and the Protein total is around 60 gr. I am soooooo tired. Forcing myself to get out and walk everyday even for short distances. I have been chilled to the bone most afternoons. Im constipated and haven't found the right recipe of laxative -stool softener-fiber combo. still have to strain to go.

Im discouraged but sticking to it.

Todays goal is to get the fluids going better.

Wish I could see or feel some progress.

camp.

Everyday I take 3 stool softeners after I had two major issues with Constipation that was so umbearably painful. I rarely get in enough Fiber and so daily taking the 3 pills (Dr. approved this) with everything else has become routine and it has done the trick. It does take time to get things regulated though and sometimes I add in a 4th or 5th if things feels off, but so far in general everything is moving along and that issue is being dealt with, But I feel your pain and it was horrible when I was going through that and dread it with a passion!! Good luck!

Hi, I don't know how old you are, but if you still have a period that's your weight gain, women go through the Water gain.

Im five weeks out and hit a 2 week stall. I left the hospital 9lbs heavier than when I went in for surgery. It was all the IV fluids. I was in for 4 days. Hang in there ladies. Its probably Water retention. It will come off.

I am having the same problem. Surgery was Oct 1st, came home 8lbs heavier. My 1st visit was 18 days later and I had lost the Water weight plus 20 lbs. It has been 2 weeks since then and I have only lost 7 lbs. I am due to start my period so I was hoping it was that. I also have not been walking as much as I should due to the effects of hurricane Sandy - its nasty out. Supposed to be better tomorrow. Working harder at getting fluids in. So glad to hear I'm not the only one going through his.

So glad to see this. I'm almost 3 Weeks out Monday and I have been at a stall all week so far. I did start my period yesterday so I'm hoping that's the problem.

I'm 40 yrs old but had a hysterectomy so the "monthly cycle" is not due to my weight. I think Im not getting enough fluids or calories in. I probably get in approx 200-300 calories a day. And Fluid intake isnt good either. Im so worn out & tired that its all I can do to get up & walk. Seriously I am a mother of 5 grown children but I've never been this tired in all my life. Cant wait for better days!

I have been hovering around the same weight for days, and who knows if my period will come normal or not..... I guess only time will tell.

Sharon- you're tired and worn out because your body has no fuel. Get Protein in and get your fluids in. So important! I'll be 3 weeks out on Wednesday and its been a struggle, but definitely more energized when I get my Protein, Vitamins and fluids in.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
