Seminar Before Surgery?

Recommended Posts

I received my approval from my HMO to see the bariatric surgeon and when i scheduled my appt the drs office is having me do a seminar before they see me. A little strange I thought but I thinks it's because the seriousness of the decision. The Doc is Dr. Krahn in San Bernardino.

I had to go to a seminar before I got my surgeon appointment. I think it's fairly common from what I've heard.

Does anyone know how long after the seminar before surgery? I'm just trying to figure it out.

I went to my seminar in April, first visit with the surgeon in June, surgery Oct 1st. A lot will depend on your surgeon and your insurance requirements. My insurance only required 3 months supervised weight loss.

Yeah it depends on what your insurance requires. Mine was 3 months also. I ran into some issues with my heart and had to see a cardiologist for clearance so that pushed me back a little. I went to my seminar in December, met with surgeon in February and had surgery in August.

I only had to attend 1 seminar lasted hour in 1/2. it was at the clinic the doctors have, went to seminar and then signed up for surgery same night they called me for my first appt 2 weeks later had all the test done EKG, blood work, chest xray, during the seminar found out that i would need the psyhc evalutation, and a upper scope done, so next day after seminar i set that all up into motion and got it all done. my next appt is 11/2/12. hope i find out about the surgery, hoping to get it done before the new year, so I can say my resolution is too lose weight and this time I will by golly.

I have to do the same thing and attend a seminar before I meet the surgeon. The seminar for me is Thursday and I feel this will be the first day of my journey even though I have been preparing for months. I agree with joyaskins34 and that the seminars are very helpful and will have great resources for me down the road.

Seminar was required for me. I went in June 2012. I will be having surgery most likely at the end of next month, first week in January. I had to do tons of pre-op testing and 6 months of weigh-ins for my surgeon and insurance. Good luck! :P

I am actually going to my first seminar tomorrow. When I called the hospital to inquire about surgery, this was the first step. I have to go to TWO 3 hour seminars this week. 3-5 tomorrow and Thursday. Then my next appointment after that is scheduled for November 27th where I meet with the PA and the nutritionist..... i'm really excited that tomorrow starts my first steps towards surgery :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
