Downtime From Band To Bypass

Recommended Posts

Yikes! I've only planned on being off a week. That's what my Doctor suggested. My surgery is this coming Monday, the 19th. I hope mine is smooth sailing! The pre-admitting guy just called and said I'm gonna need my pain meds, as i will be in a lot more pain than the normal bypass, because the surgery will be more invasive....I'm freaking out a little now!

Good luck you will be fine, I think my first surgeon did the damage. But think you will need two weeks minimum xx

@Kelly, Why more invasive and more pain?

Due to the removal of the band and the port. Both cause more scar tissue to cut through...and added time to the surgery.

Don't worry about your....surgery went just fine, it was 3 hours. The first day was the toughest, not much pain, not enough the pain meds couldn't help...but the pain meds make you sleep most of the day, which is good....each day gets better and better. I was barely in pain by the 3rd day...but I still take my vicodin, from being sore from incisions and laying on my back at night! Ug! That's probably the worst part! You'll do great...

I have had a band for 4 years and have been bullemic since day one. Shortly after I had it put in, my insurance changed from BC/BS to Medicare with a BC/BS Medigap back-up and my place did not accept Medicare and did nothing to help me.

Recently, I discovered that they now do accept it and am scheduled for 2/25/13 for a lap removal and RNY. The new doctor says that my band must have slipped and that a lot of the time there was nowhere for the food to go and when it would shift and I was able to eat, I was ravenous and did not stop! The new doc seems really nice and does not require a pre-surgery liquid diet. Just one day, followed by Dulcolax.

I am 60 and do not work anymore due to health issues. I formerly worked in the cardiopulmonary department at a hospital. As soon as I heal after this surgery, I have to have a revision on a total hip replacement I had close to two years ago. The joint is okay but it was a no glue, no screw implant and my bone did not grow around the rod that goes into the femur and it hurts. It was scheduled for 10/24 but they cancelled at the last minute and decided it has to be done in a much larger hospital with more equipment available as it is a tricky procedure. I have an appointment to see the new ortho doc on 1/8/13. This surgery has a lengthy recovery time and I am hoping to be all together by June as that is when we start our music festival outings.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
