Trying To Decide Btwn Rny And Vgs

Recommended Posts

Hi! I have had LapBand since 2007. I lost approx 35 pounds and kept it off. I am having some complications and my surgeon recommends a revision. Has anyone out there revised from Band to RNY? What kind of results did you see? I am leaning towards the Sleeve but I am Diabetic and would like to have that added benefit of not being Diabetic right away. Any feedback is welcome! Thanks

Deb I have had the lap band for seven years it has never helped my diabetes, I would just lose gain lose gain the same 30 pounds

I am having a revision on Nov 7 to RNY, my decision is based on the diabetic factor.

I am very insulin resistant I have to take massive doses of insulin which in turns causes weight gain and inflammation through out my body. I am putting all my eggs in the RNY basket.

You will find a lot of info on here, just type some search words in and you will find so much info,

And everyone here is so supportive,

Welcome

Thank you so much! I really struggled with the decision but I had to consider my health first. I am excited but very scared at the same time. I hope your surgery goes well and I hope to hear a wonderful success story afterwards! Will you be having the band reomoved and the revision in the same srgery?

Yes the plan is to remove the band and the RNY at the same time. I think the only thing that could change that would be if the Doc got in there and found something the band has done we aren't aware of. I sure hope not. But I am having the barium swallow test on Wednesday so maybe that would show if there was something wrong. Just crossing my fingers that I don't wake up with no band and no RNY.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
