Scared To Take The Leap

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm very interested in gastric but I turn 40 in April and have a BMI over 50 so I'm a really big man. However I'm a big chicken when it comes to going under and pain. Additionally I'm concerned with the skin issue I will have afterwards. Any guys out there that are over six feet had a BMI over 50 pre op who can give me some idea of what to expect and give me pointers on what to expect?

I am not a guy...and can still understand your concern, I ran the other way up to one week prior to surgery. My risk factors were very high with my heart problem, and so a friend pointed out that God opened the door, and it was either to get healed or to go to God-I had to leave the decision in His hands. I did. Now, I am healthier than I have been in 20 years, more energy...and looking pretty good as well.

Oops sorry you did say big man. You had surgery 20 years ago? No weight gain? Everything is good. Kept up with exercise & healthy eating?

Surgery was 4/26/12 lost 104 lbs so far, and feel better than I have in the last 20 years. Also skinnier than I have been in the last 20 years.

I think your friend is one smart cookie (no pun intended) Glad you listened to her wisdom.

I am too...went from dying to...living. grandly!! The bad news is I really discovered when I was no longer just an insurance check, everything at home fell apart. So at least if I ever go back on the dating scene, I will look good in tight jeans...lol!

Thank you all for the replies, it is sure nice to have people to talk to so I can get some idea of the real world experiences with gastric. :) I am over 400 lbs 6'2" or 3" and going on 40 in April 2013. I just want to be able to go to Wal-Mart or some other department store and be able to actually shop for clothing. I actually think if I will go through with the surgery that once I lose enough weight so that I can buy clothing without having to order it online I will probably breakdown and cry. :( It has been almost 20 years since I have been able to buy much of any clothing anywhere other than the internet.

Do not be nervous honest, im the biggest baby.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
