I have not had my surgery yet but I was wondering about something. I've been overweight a long time. Do you think that makes a difference in your excess skin rather than someone who's only been overweight maybe 5 years or so?

i worry about the same thing! overweight my whole life - and VERY overweight at that.

if you already have a problem with a hanging stomach (there are some big people who have big stomachs, but they don't hang - mostly men!) then it's still gonna hang when you lose weight.

The best thing you can do is work out to tone up your body, but considering how quickly you lose with rny, it's inevitable. You can't argue with gravity.

However, skin is an organ and very elastic, and eventually it will tighten up SOME on its own. Again, working out will help this process along. Saunas or red light therapy could help and some spas offer wraps or massages targets to weight loss surgery patients that can help firm up the skin. There is no miracle cure to it, though. And a Tummy Tuck is a thousand times more painful than the rny itself with longer healing time.

What I know is that my body is a mess as it is right now. Having surgery will slim me down, but I'm still gonna have flab, stretch marks, varicose veins, etc - those things will require more work after surgery. Even if I have to wear Spanx with everything - if I can get into "normal size" clothes - that's a victory. If I can get off bp meds, that's a victory. If I can go hiking for miles and miles with my friends - that's a victory!

There's options to get rid of skin, or you can learn to live with it. You're gonna be so much happier when you have your life back!! :)

Good luck to us ALL!

I'm worried about loose skin as well. I was wondering if people wear Shapewear? Does it become part of your daily wardrobe?

Shapewear is not part of my wardrobe, but I am beginning to think it should. I kinda want to lose a bit more before I get some because of the cost. But yes I have issues with a bit of the hang and I was 261 (275 a year before) and I still have 40 some pounds left to go. I bought my first pair of Spanx this weekend to wear with my dress I bought, so I will see how that works this weekend. My biggest concern is my arms, they are so flappy, they might knock someone over if they stand close enough to me. UGH!!

Google slimpressions....they have great compression garments. I bought the t-shirt one and it really kept things tight.tightens the tummy back and arms... looks like a 3/4 length sleeve t-shirt but the front part was scooped out so that it doesn't squish your boobies.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
