I have looking into getting the bypasss for over a decade but have now finally taken the step. I went to a seminar last night to get me ready for it and I have my first consultation visit with the Doctor Friday. I am terrified just going into the office and I dont know why I feel this way. I thought talking to other people could help bring down my anxiety. Has anyone else felt this way? I appreciate all of your comments.

Oh I did. I'm still terrified. I'm like you I have wanted this for years. I almost puked going to the seminar. I think it's the realness of it and the fact you are admitting you have a real weight problem. That is a bit step. I can say I'm still nervous and a little scared but with all the testing and guidance you start to relax. It's a life changing event. What has helped me was my little support group: hubby and BF. This board has been a GREAT help. Very supportive and wonderful information that helps ease the anxiety. Good luck!

I think it is natural to feel this way. This is life changing surgery. It also takes a real commitment. I too thought about this for a decade and finally had my that's it moment from then on I felt great about the decision. I interviewed two surgeons and talked in detail with hubby and family. Remember you are in control of this and if you are not 100% comfortable with your surgeon look for someone else. You will be seeing this doctor for the rest of your life and you need to be comfortable with their abilities and bedside manner. Do research and make sure you are informed and ready and everything will be just fine. If there is one thing I tell people is this is not an easy fix. It is a struggle mentally and physically especially the first few months. Once you are able to get in control of things it is an easy way to live in my experience. You are like a new baby trying to learn to eat all over again, and it is worth all the hard work you put in to it!! My surgery was done 6/5 I have lost 70lbs and dropped 5 pant sizes! I feel sexy and great!

Im very new too and felt the same way. I still don't know how to reply lol. But Monday i had my first visit with the nutritionist. I was almost going to cancel because i feel guilty taking that money away from my family. We struggle just to pay the bills. But i figured that i have put everyone ahead of me up until now that's why i am overweight now. That first visit with the doctor though made me feel totally at ease. Write down questions that you want to ask the doctor. That way you don't get the deer in head lights thing going on. I really like my surgeon so i feel comfortable after meeting with him. But i think its totally normal to feel like you do. Im just one step ahead of you so if you wanta chat sometime let me know. The diet visit was real easy they just tell you you'll need Vitamins and to switch to more Protein. I already wrote alot so let me know if you wanta know more. Gl!

Even though we want to lose weight. Make sure this is what you want. Are you ready to change your eating habits? Some people want to lose weight & get slim then get lazy & start on bad habits & the weight comes back on so if your not ready for a change stay how you are. Better to be happy fat then depress because you cant eat a slice of pizza. I'm not going threw this I went all the way in this life change & besides occasional chocolate kisses. I don't cheat & I don't want to be fat again. I want everyone to think about it. Don't have surgery & in 5 years gain it all back. I been reading on other stories & it does make me think did people think it was an easy way out then to regain it all back. I'm in this for the long ran.

I thank you for all of your replies, I see that this forum is going to help me out so much. Just with only the few replies I am getting insite to the life changing decision I am making. Although I am still new to the forum you guys jumped right in there to agree with me that it is scary and this is normal. I thank you again. Tomorrow (Friday) and the consultation and although I am scared, I am excited because the is the first step in achieving that goal. : )

We are all courageous here :) Being courageous means being afraid and doing it anyway. Keep moving forward...one step at a time...and next thing you know you will be done and smiling in the mirror at the skinny you!

I have known several people who have gone through this process. Some have had bad experiences & others have had wonderful experiences. I know for me personally, I am doing this for me and my children. I will be 40 in Feb and I have some much pain that you would think I was about 90. I can barely walk half the time because of pain in my feet, knees & back and the rest of the time I am too tired to do anything. I am sick of the way I feel all the time and hate not being able to play or do things with my 5 kids. I am scared about the whole process, but I am terrified about not being able to be around to see my children graduate high school or college or ever being able to meet any of my grandchildren. I do consider myself lucky in a sense because one of the nutritionists is the sister of one of my coworkers and I have complete faith & trust in her and I am able to feel at ease with her. I started out at 258 and have lost 11lbs since my pcp made the referral on 9/28. I just have to keep focused on the ultimate goal...a healthier me!

I am per-op myself and believe me I am having more and more moments of being scared as the time gets closer. My surgery is 10-31-12....two weeks from now. I'm asking myself questions about my decision constantly right now but then I keep reminding myself of all I have to gain in becoming and staying healthier. After months of reading many different post I do realize this see saw of emotion and second guessing myself is part of the process. However.....this is a great forum for easing some of the anxiety associated with this journey.....keep coming back and reading as many post as possible. It has helped me and will help you too! You will be on the losers bench before you know it!

I wish it were sooner rather than later. I have to do a six month program so I will not be having my surgery until some time in April. I know everyone says that the time goes fast but I am so ready & can't stand having to wait.

So tomorrow is the consultation, I guess I was a day ahead of my self in my last post. Although it is only a consult, I really shouldnt be scared. I should be excited. However I am both. I have yet to find out what the stipulations are with my insurance. When I called they didnt want to give me much information. With reading all of the other posts, I am seeing a lot of people playing the waiting game. I guess I should just prepare for now for a long wait ahead of me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
