demsvmejm 5 Posted February 3, 2007 I've been going through the pre-op testing since December. I'm scheduled for a full blown treadmill EKG next thrusday and if all goes well, PCP will clear me for surgery with LB Dr. I'm still confused if I want to do this :help: When I was at the PCP yesterday the nurse said, "you don't look like you need WLS." The psych Dr.said the same, your not that overweight. I'm 4'11" (that's short!) and yesterday weighed 190 (at consultation in Dec, I was 201#) I wear a size 18 ..I've been overweight since I was 8. I'm convinced that the stop smoking drug I'm on is causing this weight loss without me even trying. Too bad I can only take it 5 more weeks! My DH hasn't said a word about it since we got into a fight. He thinks I can do WW and lose weight and get down the 50% just like the LB stats say most ppl will be at three years out. (according to the statistics) So that would be around 165-170 lbs. If I do do this, he will not support me at all. He doesn't feel this surgery is necessary with such poor research results. I see people here with BMI's way lower than my 39, and they did the surgery. I'm so confused, Do I? Don't I? If I could show him some research results that show a better success rate, I might sway him. Any new research I might have missed? Everyone on this forum is doing great, but most are not even a year+ after surgery. Just looking for a listening ear. :think
WantTheBand 0 Posted February 4, 2007 demsvmejm, I went through alot of the same things. The number of people who told me that I didnt look like I needed WLS the 4 weeks before surgery was overwhelming. I carry my weight well, but I am uncomfortable and disgusted with myself. I did all the legwork and arranged financing and went through all the tests and then still had serious second thoughts before the surgery actually happened. I had to rely on the judgement that I used to start this whole process, not the judgement of a person afraid of surgery. What concerns me is that your hubby is not behind you on this. My wife was my lifeline through this whole thing. Without her positive support for my decision, it would have been alot more difficult. However, if she had dis-approved of it, I dont think I could have made it. You need the people around you to support your decision on something this serious. Let him know that you are doing it for the right reasons and that it's what you really want. As far as the research, spend some time looking at the real world results of the people who are posting on this forum. That's better than any other research in my opinion.... Good luck and you know that we will support your decision!!
coltonwade 27 Posted February 4, 2007 I get alot of " You dont look like you weight THAT much " . Im 5'4 and i weight 240 . Apparantly I carry my weight well according to everyone . I DONT See it. I have had a few people tell me " You dont need the surgery it you dont look like you weight that much " That gets frustrating . As for your DH . My dh went through alot of the same things, with me. A LOT OF his issues were lack of awareness about the band. Has he gone to a seminar with you ? Have you showed him info on how diets fail and end up putitng on MORE WEight than before the diet ? I also explained to him that the band was something I felt I could DO and succeed with . Diets were not "Doable" for me and That even exercise at this weight was painful. Eventually he came around . He's supportive now . Good luck . I have known for 2 yrs this is 100% what i wanted. Dont do it unless you know . Sure I still have doubts ( Im not banded yet ) But it passes and I get my determination back to get the surgery done NOW . LOL Good luck , I hope you figure things out Mindy
