Got my surgical date

Recommended Posts

I just got my surgical date yesterday (it will be on March 5th) . I am very nervous, but want to go through with it this time ( backed out two years ago).

I don't kow how I will keep to the liquid diet for two weeks before, since I am having the surgery because I have been unable to stick to any diet.:) I seem to want to eat a lot now, to make up for no eating at all for weeks. Any tips for how to get through this?

Also I saw some pictures of peoples' scars (I thought there would only be one scar..I don't get why there are multiple scars)..do these heal up well?

thanks for advising a nervous newbie:)

The liquid diet was very emotional for me. Pre-op was a stressful time and I had to endure without my old friend - food. Some nights I just had to go to bed by 7 p.m. to stop the emotional pain. The hunger pain wasn't so bad as long as I got in my Protein requirements.

My tips:

  • Skim milk is your friend. That made me feel the fullest. I am not a milk drinker but the full feeling was so good that I adapted.
  • Popsicles are the bomb.
  • Chewing gum made me less crazy.
  • Journal, journal, journal
  • If you are comfortable with telling others do so. Having others "know" kept me on the straight and narrow.
  • Get your Protein - at least 60 grams per day. It will help you feel full and keep your energy level up.

This is preparation for a life changing surgery - not a diet. You will not have to do this forever. It helped to keep reminding myself that this surgery is a gift. You can do it. You won't back out this time.

The scars...

The various incisions are necessary for the camera, for the gas that keeps your stomach inflated and for the surgical instruments to insert and place the band. In addition to 4 or 5 small incisions you will have one larger (approx. 2 inches) for your port. This is the one that hurts some.

Mine is March 5th also! Where are you going? I'll be in Mexico with Dr. Ortiz.

I too am worried sick. I've been buying up all the Protein drinks I can find so I can start tasting them and see what works. I also want to make sure I have a stash ready for when I come home as I doubt I'm going to want to go out for a while.

I have so many stretch marks from being pregnant, plus a c-section scar that I figure these new ones will just blend in

Mine will be at NYU in NYC with Dr. Fielding. I do not live in England...although I do love it there:)

What Protein Drinks do you all like? I guess I should be trying out some as well..although honestly I am more into getting my last tastes of real food for a while:)

I hate to admit it, but I haven't started drinking them yet, lol. I'm enjoying my last month of pigging out :P I ordered a sample pack from powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury.com, one from bariatriceating.com and I have some EAS from who knows when. I just know I was looking in my pantry and found 2 large unopened bottles of vanilla and chocolate of the soy protein!

I also want to head to GNC next week and try some of the Isopure RTD in bottles.

Anyone used the Magic Bullet to mix the powder drinks with? I don't have one, but I have a crappy old blender that's big and I thought the Magic Bullet might be easier.

I'm not buying ANY Protein stuff until I get my surgery date....(Its a mental thing)

As for the graphics... called Tickers... You can get them from many places like the ticker factory.com and a host of others... what you'll need to do is make them, copy the url, and then add it to your signature.. (user cp control)

Hi Magnolia,

Congrats on your surgery date! I I dont' have a surgery date yet. Yes, I'm worried about the liquid diet stage also. I am more worried about after. I don't know how I will have the willpower!

I'm going to order a ton of Protein mix samples, I figure the variety will maybe give me something to look forwad to when my willpower gets the most of me. This site is really great for ideas...I't just wonderful.

One of the requirements with the clinic I'm going to is to start journaling everything I eat, I even have to do a 2 day "mushy" stage to show them I understand what this entails and they also want us to go out and find a Protein Drink we like.

In the preapproval state they want to start seeing a weight loss.

One thing that helps with the cravings is my hot chocolate made with splenda I take 2 tsp. cocoa (unsweetened), 1 packet of splenda. Mix with hot Water and add a little skim milk. It's really good and helps with my cholocate craving. I don't know the actual calorie content, but think it's under 30 calories.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
