I am 6 days post-op and am trying desperately to get all my Water and Protein in but am finding it near impossible. I really need some hints from those of you who were successful.

Help please, Maggie

Maggie, for now its best to just focus on Fluid, period. Be it Water, propel, Protein Shake, just keep sipping and sipping. Right now it's most important to focus on staying hydrated. Next week during your purée food stage, you can worry more about adding more protien. The protien goal you were given is to be worked up to, nobody can take in up to 70 mg's of Protein plus 64 oz. of fluid 6 days post-op. Try and remember to take you time, slow down, relax and sip sip sip! Good luck.

I had problems getting enough Fluid when I first had my surgery. Water, for some reason, just didn't go down well. I learned to live off G2 Gatorade and some regular Gatorade as well. Find something that you like the taste of, try to make it sugar free, but get it in there. Don't worry, it gets better with time.

sugar free Popsicles are good as well for fluids. Jello too!

I need to stay hydrated, I was dehydrated in the hospital and it wreaked havoc with my blood pressure. I don't have trouble getting fluids down its just the Protein drinks really fill me up. Thank you ladies, I am going to sip, sip, sip today, but mostly relax.

Definitely don't focus on the Protein right now. I was told not to worry about it for the first couple if weeks. Just Water Water water and walking, walking walking. Good luck!

Don't make yourself crazy trying to get everything in... as most said above, do your Protein first and sip, sip, sip, sip every waking hour. That was the only way I could get it all in... my doctor's office said that you have to work up to the 64 oz. and 64 grams of protein in the beginning. I had a hard time with the Water as well. I would say about a month out I was finally getting both 64/64 in but it took all my waking hours thou.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
