Metformin / Pcos - Anyone Else Have Issues?

Recommended Posts

I'll be 3 weeks post-op on Wednesday - I lost 16 pounds my first week, and NOTHING in the following 2 weeks. I'm following all my directions, and at my Phase 2 appt today my nutritionist was also a bit concerned that I stopped so completely so quickly.

Something I brought up to her which she agreed I should speak to the NP/Dr. about - I've been on Metformin for almost 10 years now for PCOS. I've gone off and on at times, and every time it's the same - I come off it, and I IMMEDIATELY start putting weight on. Go back on it, and weight just drops off - no changing eating, exercise, or anything.

My surgeon had me stop the metformin prior to surgery, and said I'd "never take it again". I'm wondering, has anyone else run into something like this? It just feels to me like when I've gone off it in the past... have an appt to meet with the NP at my next phase change... in two and a half weeks.

I am having the same issue. I have Pcos and was on metformin for 10 yrs. I was told to stop post surgery. My surgery was on 8/27. I stopped metformin on the 26th. I lost 16 pounds on the liquid diet during the two weeks prior to surgery. I lost 10 pound the first week two pounds the second week and one last week. I am following the diet instructions and walking. I am getting very depressed and wondering why I bothered with wls at this point because I feel stuck.

Is metformin a treatment for PCOS? I have never heard of that before. I have always just taken birth control for my PCOS. I too lost a lot of weight the first week and it slowed down but I'm still managing to lose 2 to 3 pounds a week.

I have pcos, but have not taken metformin in several years. I am still having Polly cystic ovaries since the surgery. My doc has threatened to put me back on BC, but I am hopeful things will even out. BC always makes me gain weight.

Metformin is glucophage which is a drug to treat diabetes. A lot of doctors put pcos patients on it because it helps to keep weight in check. It also helps to control blood sugar because even though we are not diabetic we do have a high rate of getting diabetes over time.

Metformin not only helps stimulate the pancreas to do its job which will stop the weight gain. It is also used to stimulate ovulation for those trying to get pregnant. I had to stop taking it pre op because my sugars were going too low. It is originally intended for.diabetes, the perk of helping infertility was a bonus that blessed my life. I have noticed that I am losing slower than non pcos wls patients, I don't think it has anything to do with the metformin, I think it is the pcos. I'm just hoping with pcos that the more I lose the better things will get. This surgery was supposed to cure it (according to my surgeon). I can remember when I was 16 I.was skinny as a stick and I still had issues. My ovaries hurt so bad and my period was so erratic. I couldn't do bc cuz pill makes me psycho.

I was told by my gynecologist @ the time that metformin is used as a 1st line of treatment for infertility. That's how I got diagnosed with pcos finally is because I had been trying for 2 years to get pregnant.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
