New York became the first city in the US to ban the sale of large sodas and sugary beverages in restaurants, a move that Mayor Michael Bloomberg said will help combat the "obesity epidemic" that kills 6,000 New Yorkers every year and is destroying the health of Americans.

A step in the right direction or an infringement by government on personal rights to make individual choices?

Or buy two smaller ones. Lol. There are a lot of eyes on this and it will be interesting to see what kind of results the ban has. Safe to say the soft drink manufacturers will be watching closely.

People will always do what they want. I think it should be people choice...just like it was my choice to have surgery and never have soda again.

Silly government control freaks think by banning large sodas they will change human nature. People who believe we are all sheep who need to be herded. If only obesity could be solved by banning certain foods or food sizes??? What about those of us who've been obese since childhood and way before super sized drinks? ? This is an over simplified response to a complicated problem.

Absolutely ridiculous, I have not had a soda in eight years or do I plan to, but what is next, limiting our red meat, limiting ice cream for kids, candy. How can they even realistically keep tabs on this?!? What happened to home of the free?!? This is not going to stopor even help people from making poor choices or being overweight, obese etc... Why don't they invest in educating people instead of this ridiculous attempt to control people!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
