LapBand style eating

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am just starting the process towards maybe a lapband. I am supposed to be eating tiny bites, chew, chew, chew, take half and hour to eat, etc. I find it all impossible. Am I kidding myself that I will be able to do it once I actually have a lapband? Or is this a sign I am not a good candidate? Also have a hard time eating three meals a day and 2 Snacks, all with some form of Protein. Am I a failure already?:rose:

truly said I was always drinking with food and was an addict to coca cola. But once I got the band I stopped it all, cause I wanted the band to work so much. Now I dont miss it. I think you will get used to it. Of course I tried once not to follow the rules, but its painful...coca cola makes you burp and it actually hurts when you drink it.When you eat and drink you get so full that it hurts...and if you dont chew well you get golfball and PB, so dont worry you will try it once and never again :-)) just my experience.good luck to you on your band journey:-)

Life before the band is different than life afterwards. I'm not sure that the before is a predicter of life afterwards. I ate fast, chewed little, drank Sprite or iced tea at every meal. Immediately after the band, I slowed down my eating to the point I was probably taking too long to eat, I chew, chew, chew, haven't had a sprite in 7 months, and never drink with a meal.

Look inside yourself and try to figure out if this is really something you want to do, that you are commited for life to make these changes. Its funny now looking back. I just never think of sprite, of eating with less than 30 minutes to devote to it, not to serve my meals on a salad plate, not to eat in front of the TV, and not to reach for bread and butter when eating out.

Life is full of changes. This is the best change I've made for myself. The decision is individual. Good luck on your decisions.

I agree with Barbara 465 and Eficka that once you have got the band you change how you eat - I always drunk bucket loads of diet coke with my meal and without - I would always drink with my meal and even today after nearly a year I am shocked at how little food I survive on and I am more healthly today than this time last year - good luck go for it - you will not regret it

Hi, everyone,

Thanks for your thoughtful input. Some good advice. The more I read about lapband, the more serious I realize this decision is. That is good. I am not taking this lightly at all. I do believe that I can follow the rules for eating when I have to. I don't drink with meals anymore. I feel as if the tiny bites and taking 30 minutes to eat are hard when I have a regular size stomach. Keep thinking with a lapband I won't be able to overdo it or I will pay the price. The "tool" that I need. Thanks again! Bonnie

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
