Two Surgeries? How Long In Between?

Recommended Posts

For those of you who have had two surgeries how long apart was the band removal and then the bypass? And how and why was this decided?

I had my band removed and converted to a gastric bypass all in the same surgery. I had this done because of complications with my band and not getting the results I needed. I am 5 weeks post op today. I feel great and I am getting wonderful results. My doctor said the surgery and recovery could not have gone any better!

Hi me too...... I just had my pre op re op appt. Lots of scar tissue from band causing trouble eating even when empty band. I am on my second band. My surgeon tells me I can go from band to bypass in one shot. If I go sleeve I have to do two surgeries. My apprehension for bypass has always been the malabsorption and vit deficiency issues especially Iron anemia. I had a great talk with him and for me he recommend bypass because of my metabolism issues. Enough about me how are you feeling and what was your downtime after surgery and did you have to have a drain?

My lapband came out in Jan or Feb of 2010 and I had the RNY July 2012. My band was put in in 2006, revised to a bigger band in 2008 and then came out 2010 due to a really bad prolaps. It was to the point where even being unfilled caused me awful acid reflux that woke me up in the middle of the night as if I were drowning in my own salava and I was cooking from the inside out. I had to wait for at least 6 months for my stomach to heal in order to have another bariatric surgery. It took me a while to get over the emergency surgery and to grasp the thought of having my organs re-routed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
