I was curious if you've ever heard of anyone going back to work 5 days after surgery. It will be a sit down job. I have surgery on Wednesday and I have to be back on Monday. Do you think that this is even possible? Im a little worried....

Everyone is different really. I know for me I wouldn't have been comfortable going back after 5 days. I ran into a few issues with an incision infection that didn't appear until my second week so that kept me out even longer. A sit down job will be easier but, make sure the desk isn't hitting at the point of an incision area. You may find it gets irritated.

What do you mean they are making you? Are they forcing you back even if you are not medically released? I'm in HR and you may have some recourse. Have you been there more than a year?

I had surgery on a Tuesday was back to work the following Monday. I am a high school teacher and it was the last week of school so I got my big boys to do any lifting and I was tired but made it without complications. I think we are all so different but sometimes just deciding you can do it, if you are not in terrible pain will get you through. Pain is to me the best indicator of whether it's doable. I really had very little pain. I also went to the gym the Saturday after surgery. Did a very careful, light workout as I had been working out up to the day of surgery--do what you can don't beat yourself up for what you can't.

I had surgery on 8/13 and would have gotten to go back to work on 8/23 but instead of using a drain they leave the incison open....and I had some drainage issues so they told me I couldnt go back until Monday 8/27.... I am SO ready to go back!! I hate being home alone!!

I had surgery on Monday and today is when I am feeling better, still swollen and I have a drain. I am however taking two more weeks off to give my body time to catch up.

I had my surgery on Monday and I don't feel ready to do anything yet. Everyone is differrent. Listen to your body. But if it were me, I'd take a few more days to myself just in case or at least work less hours and build back up to my normal hours.

Good luck!

I'm going back to work tomorrow after being off for one month. I can't lie, I'm scared out of my mind. I work hard and never take breaks I often have lunch meetings when reps bring in [delicious] bad food. We always have Starbucks runs, donut boxes, and enough energy drinks to move a mountain!

I am packing my lunch, Snacks, and have my crystal light and Protein bars.... But its going to be hard.

I can't ask everyone in my office to not bring that stuff in, its my personal choice not theirs, but how do I deal?

Back to the grind tomorrow!

I was working until 3 mths into my 7 mth process. I was having to take off work for this test or that test and the monthly weigh in appointments and regular doctor appointments. So I just quit. And since I had just started there I knew FMLA was not available to me once I do have surgery. So I just decided to wait till the process is over and the surgery is over and recovery is over before finding a different job

I found that I realized the donuts, Starbucks and etc was not worth it. You will more than likely get sick if you eat that stuff and I hate throwing up at work.

Thank you! I'm nervous & doubting my will power. BUT I'm sure I'll be on my 100% post op best behavior :)

Your day founds a lot like mine at work. I'm having my surgery in the morning and I worry about going back. My doctor gave me a four wk note so we will see what happens. Just stay strong. You have come so far. Hopefully you will find it easier than you think. Good luck!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
