Changed My Mind....

Recommended Posts

So...I didn't change my mind about surgery, I am still having it. I have just decided to have the Sleeve done instead. I have wanted rny this whole time until I met with my doctor and she told me more about the sleeve. I was under the impression it was only for very very obese people and I didn't qualify for it. Come to find out it is actually going to be a little better for me because I am so young and there's no reason really to re route my itestines is what my dr. Says. I've done a ton of research on it and have decided that for me that is the best route to go. Unless of course for some reason my insurance wont approve it...let's hope that doesn't happen...but I just wanted to say thank u to everyone that has helped me on here and gave me advice and support, it means alot! I will be leaving this forum in a few days. Its just a lot to keep up with two. I hope everyone continues to have an amazing journey! :) take care.

In my Reserch I found that Sleeving was done on extremely over weight people and people that had less then 100 lb to lose.

My doctor wanted me to go with the sleeve but changed his mind after the Endocopy was done and I needed to have the RNY done. Still don't understand why but I trusted my doctor and went with what he wanted .

Sorry you will be leaving. Just remember we will always be here if you need us

I wanted the sleeve so bad. My thought for a year was that I was getting it done! My final consult and my surgeon tells me that he didn't recommend the sleeve because of my hernia. I wish you the best! I've heard a lot if people say they wish it had been an option for them.

I would have done the sleeve as well, that was my preference but my doctor told me that the bypass is the most aggressive and my health was such that I needed drastic results quickly. My brother just got the sleeve last week, his loss seems pretty drastic to me already lol. Best of luck to you, either way you're on the road to a better life. Peace.

Thanks so much for the support and nice comments everyone! It means a lot. I am waiting to find out from my insurance....I called them and they told me it covers the same way as it does for the rny but Im waiting to actually make sure the letter of approval goes through. The lady that deals with all the insurance stuff at my drs. Office said she hasn't ever had a problem with blue cross covering it ...so hopefully it does. Or I will def. Be back to RNY bc I know it covers that for sure lol. Yeah my doctor said bc im in such great health for being overweight she didn't see the need in the re routing. And I don't have diabetes so I don't need it bc of that. So hopefully everthing goes smoothly. :) thanks again

Congratulations on your decision to lose. I had the sleeve August 2011, and only lost 45lbs to date. I only had 100lbs to lose. My dr. Warned me that the loss would be slow, but not this slow. He wanted me to have RYN but I chose the sleeve because I didn't want to deal with malabsorption. Now, one year later my dr. Wants me to have the RYN because although my HBP did come down initially, it has gone back up. I'm now back on BP meds. And the weight has stopped coming off. In addition the high blood sugar is creeping back in. :-(

Although I don't regret having WLS, I wish I had done the RYN like my dr advised. It's the most aggressive surgery and I would already be at goal. I do plann on having the revision done in October, going thru it this time will be a bit easier....I hope; I need to get at least 50lbs off. Their is always diet and exercise....and with the sleeve you will be on a diet for the rest of your life.

I am having the rny done. My doctor told me I should lose 100 lbs in the first 4 months. I am not sure how much weight I need to lose. Really never sat and figured it out sigh ....

OK so if I am 281 and 5'8" I guess I should be 150 or less? So about 130-140 lbs I need to lose

Honestly every one is different. I've always been a slow looser from day one. Dr doesn't know why, even the nurse said that the sleeve causes slow weight loss. But I knew going into this that I'd have to have a second surgery if this one didn't work. So if you're up for the challenge maybe it will work for you.

Just out of curiosity how old how are you? I'm 23 and doing the bypass. I was also under the the same impression about the sleeve. Just want to make sure i do the surgery that I will not regret in the end :)

Ill be 23 two days after surgery...a month from tomorrow. The doctor thought with me wanting to have more babies down the road and bc I don't have any health problems that the sleeve was the best route to go

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
