How Many People Have You Told?

Recommended Posts

I have only told a hand full of people about my surgery. Honestly is because I'm ashamed I let my self get this big, and ashamed I can't loose the weight by my self. My husband knows of course, my parents and in-laws, my boss and partner at work, and two friends. I have no idea what I'm gonna tell people when I start loosing weight. How am I going to explain the pictures of me to my son when he gets older?

Anyway did you tell everyone? If not who did you tell?

I hear you. I'm mortified I look like this. My husband and BF know. That's it. Not even telling my mom. Maybe after but other than that no one. Work will be hard but I'm new there so I'll explain it as watching what I eat and d exercising. It's the truth. Welcome aboard. This is a great place. We are all in this together. :-).

I felt this way for about 5 mins until it hit me like a ton of bricks.....wonder what they all think of me being this fat and never REALLY doing anything about it? I let everyone in on my decision and I told them it was not about having everyones approval but having their support. My family/friends/coworkers have been extremely supportive and I cant imagine going through this feeling truly alone and not having everyone else understand what was going on. I think you'd be surprised how much positive feedback people in your life will give you knowing you are trying to better your life.

I'm not mortified I look this way. I have spent since 7th grade dieting and literally have tried everything. I'm not ashamed of this surgery, not one bit...if anything, it makes me feel proud of myself for doing something about it! I told my family, my boyfriend and his family, and two friends. That's about it :)

I felt the exact same way! But now i have told people who I never planned on telling and they are ok with it. I wonder about the pictures, but i think i can use it as a tool to teach my 2 year old daughter healthy living.

All the luck!

I've told most people I'm close with. It's nothing to be ashamed about. Everyone will have questions and they're first judgement but once I explained everyone got on board! If they aren't supportive who needs 'em!

I didn't think about it like that. Thank you!

I don't think work needs to know the details, well my job anyways. Im sure they'll figure it out I guess I don't know. If they ask I'll talk about it but it's not something I feel comfortable just talking to them about. Let's see, people I've told so far. I told my mom and dad, very supportive. My sister, who is thinking about the surgery herself. My boyfriend, who is finally starting to come around: doesn't approve of it but says he will support me. And two of my best friends.

I was open and honest with everyone. If you asked me I told you. I felt that it was my deceleration of getting healthy. Yes I am over weight but look at what I am doing to be healthy. I also did not want people to think I had some disease and that was why I was losing weight.

I'm hoping to keep it to my husband and kids, mom, sister, cousin, and one friend here who will be helping me out. I'm worried how I will keep it quiet as people will wonder. I worry that if they ask me I'll tell them cause I'm not good at saying 'non of your business' or feel comfortable lying. I have been trying hard for a while now with no results, o maybe I can keep that up and people will think it just started to kick in? I'm having surgery next Thursday! I'm sooo nervous. It's a whirlwind!

I didn't go out of my way to tell everyone I know - but I didn't hesitate to tell friends and family and anyone else who expressed an interest. I'm proud of the decision and proud of the result. I was fortunate that without exception, everyone was quite supportive. But to be honest, that may have been because they knew or sensed that opposition would not have changed my mind. I did the research and knew exactly what to expect, what the risks were, and that the odds were overwhelmingly in my favor of having a successful surgery and long term success. I gotta say it - I love the new me!! LOL!

My husband knows -- but doesnt really understand ( after telling maybe 10 times that i will be away from home at least 4 days if not a week.. Yesterday he asked if i can come home on thursday - a day after the op!! ) i live an hour and a half from any hospital and 3 from where im having the op! I should have sms him it!!!. Apart from half a husband 3 friends know and that it. I can not decide if or what to tell my kids (12, 9, 5). I have no family living here (im english but ilive in israel) so theres no need for them to know/worry

I tell everybody that will listen. To me, it's no different than being treated for any other condition. When I get a toothache, I go to the dentist and get it fixed.

I had one co-worker who I haven't seen in a while ask me what happened, how much weight have you lost, how long did it take and how did you do it?

This one I told, "well I've been doing a lot of dancing". She gave me a odd look and walked away. Oh well.

I told everyone at work except for the patients because this is one gossip full place and rumors would have started and negative comments made. This way all lot of people know and everyone has been supportive and let me tell you how many times a week I hear things like "man you are melting away" "Hi Slim" You are doing great" "looking good" etc. What a motivation. Now people who do not know are making the same type of comments, what a rush really.

As for family I told those who live close as soon as I decided to do the surgery so I would have support, But those who lived far away and I do not really talk to much (like my parents) found out through Facebook the night before surgery. Long story but someone who knew posted about wishing me a safe surgery LOL so the story got out, which ended up being the best thing in the long run.

I have been blessed to hear only a rare horror story or negative comment but overall I have gotten nothing but encouragement and praise from coworkers and love and support from my family.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
