Its cool' date=' at least Ill know you talking to me, lol!!!So if you dont have anything going on medically why do you want the surgery. If I felt like I could lose weight and get rid of all these medical issues it wouldnt be a question for me to look at alternate options. So I definitely have had to look at the opportunity this surgery is going to give to me. The surgery is going to allow me to regain control over my health and the longetivity of my future and thats what we have to focus on. If we do right by our bodies and do what we're suppose to do after the fact, our bodies will do right by us...[/quote']

That's kind of my internal battle right now. I have minor things like back pain, but I know as I get older things will get worse and I want o be an active grandma some day. My mom is only in her 50s and she's like an old lady. I don't want to be like her. I wouldn't do it just for vanity. I'm only about 100 pounds overweight. Oh, I found out today that I'm approved and having surgery Aug 30, that's next week! It's scaring me how fast it's going but I need it one before my hubby leaves for the desert. That's another thing...I had to make my decision quickly because when he retires I won't have the opportunity.

Hey Becky' date=' I definitely have been there with the trying to lose and then get discouraged when you feel you are trying and get no results. I definitely feel this forum is a great asset for pre and post because it gives insight to all stages of this opportunity we are all being blessed with. Im just wondering how long the process is bc I wanted to do it b4 Thanksgiving.[/quote']

I meant to mention before too, I've been up and down with weight most of my adult life. My body wants to be big, I want to be small. Sometimes I win out, then I slip up and it comes back like an avalanche. When I started working out to get ready to be approved, I actually figured I would lose a ton on my own and decide not to ave it. I worked very hard or months and lost less than ten. It actually made me lean towards the surgery because I think maybe I've just lost and gained too many times, and now with being on the high side of 30s (37), I think my body just isn't willing to give up the weight now. I am really scared though, it's a life changing thing, you know?

Amanda' date=' at the top of the screen there is a button that says "reply to this topic" that is how you make a post without using the quote if you want.[/quote']

Mine doesn't have that. It might be cause I'm on an iPad and not a real computer. I'm surprised I even have my name on here lol

It's kind of weird. It's 6 months of checking in with a dietician and exercise person, and doctor visits, and one phsyc evaluation. I never finished my list of signatures, but I was working the whole time. I was also required to lose and keep off ten, which i Did by the skin of my teeth. I think they approved it without my list because my doctor and the surgeon were all writing, trying to get me in there. They know I have time issues. I haven't ad any real physical evaluations though which is kind of funny now ghat I read about other people having tests and stuff. I should clarify, when I said I was working the whole time, I meant at losing weight and stuff, not a job. I guess I better go to bed. I'll check in tomorrow. Oh, if anyone wants to chat my email is Mandy.itouch@gmail.com

I have had another day of not being able to keep my blood sugar up. I guess I will be going to see my doctor next week to adjust my insulin.

Becky I hope your sugar issues get better. Luckily I don't have to worry about mine. Diabetes runs in mu family which was another reason I chose to have surgery.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
