Diet Before Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, Im new here. Im 24 years old and have been thinking about gastric for a while now. Started the process to have it about 8 years ago but insurance wouldn't pay. Well recently I decided I want to do it again due to how my body is starting to feel (never really felt my weight til recently), and I got married last Oct and want to start a healthy family. I have been lucky and don't have any other medical problem (Thank GOD) except for my weight. I have an appointment with my doctor on Sept 5 to meet him and see what testing he wants before surgery. Im self paid because insurance still doesn't pay so I don't have to wait on any insurance clearences. So I'm hoping to have my surgery early Nov. I've seen that a lot of you have lost weight before your surgeries and I was wondering if it was a diet that you doctor placed you on before surgery and required you to lose some much weight before he did the surgery or if it was just from the 6 month program some of you had to do for insurance. Those of you that have had your surgeries are doing great and I can't wait to join you. I have enjoyed reading your post and look forward to getting more info from you on your experiences.

Some insurances do require you to lose some weight, mine was the opposite. I have a ten day full liquid sugar free diet before surgery. I imagine I will lose ten pounds or more from that. This is a great forum. People will respond...

=)

The purpose of the liquid diet before hand is to shrink your liver. Some don't have to do it and some have a variation of length. Every surgeon is different. Good luck on your journey! We are all here for you!

Welcome! I had to do a 6 month diet because that's what my insurance required. My doctor requires a 2-week liver shrink diet, which is basically high Protein, low carb and Sugar, plus 3 Protein Shakes a day. Good luck on your journey!!

I was covered by provincial health care (Canada) but I was required to to do a 21day liquid diet to shrink my liver (optifast900-4shakes a day plus water.)

Thanks y'all, so it seems like the liver shrink diet is done by everyone just for different durations depending on your doctor. A liquid diet for 3 weeks that seems tough but I guess it sets you up for the rough times to follow. I'm ready to start my journey.

I needed to lose 10% so my insurance has a program for the surgery and there is calorie counting and exercising. Day of surgery I was 8 pounds short, but k think the doctors want to see that you're trying.

My insurance didnt require a diet and my surgeon doesn't do a liver shrinking diet either. I've decided to start eating healthier on my own and lost about 18lbs. I have surgery tomorrow.

Not only does it depend on your surgeon but it depends on your weight and fat around the midsection for you liver shrinking diet. I did 2 weeks of boost diabetic (not diabetic but has more protein) and still had some very healthy meals and lost 16lbs. The doc asked about my weight loss but certainly didn't make a big deal about it.

Well I am on 1400 calorie per day balanced diet for 3-6 months ( not sure till I meet with the surgeon). Also I have to write everything down and I can not gain one pound. Is so hard right now I'm traveling a lot for work. But I'm doing better then what I was so its a start. I'm trying to keep high Protein. Then I will have the liquid diet before surgery. Welcome and good luck to you.

Thanks y'all, I'm trying to start a diet now even before my appt. I want to show them that I'm serious about getting this done. Its tough but I little easier cuz I'm broke cant buy a lot of juke, trying to make sure I can pay for the surgery. But I think it'll all be worth it in the end.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
