I have my upper endoscopy on September 5th at 11:30am. It's also my first night of college classes, which start at 5:45pm. Does it take a ling time to recover from the groggy feeling of anesthesia? I've never been put to sleep before lol!

I was drowsy for a couple of hours, but I find I react strongly to anethesia anyway. I know they wont let you drive yourself. But I am sure that you will be fine by the time you go to class that night. Who needs to be totally alert on the first day of class anyway, just a syllabus to go over etc. Haha

I just took a good long nap after mine, and I was good to go in a few hours. I guess it just depends on how you react to anesthesia.

I've had one before, unrelated to surgery. I woke up immediately, no drowsiness whatsoever.

Oh, good to know! I can't afford to miss first night of classes. I'll just have to get a ride there and back. Thanks :)

I agree with everyone here the drug most commonly used is the same one Michael Jackson used for sleep. So for many it's like a great sleep and they wake up refreshed. I would ask them what they use because general anesthesia is a totally different thing from twilight sleep or conscious sedation with both you don't feel or remember anything but I am very sensitive to general and am hard to rouse and puke a lot but was just fine with the propofol. It's a very fine med just requires monitoring and skilled administrators. Plus your procedure is not a long one so you won't be out long. Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
