HPV Vaccine

Recommended Posts

I am and always have been very skittish of vaccinations.

This one, thankfully, I have a while yet before I have to make my choice. My daughter is 4.

I however, will not be taking the shot.

I dont jump on the "shot bandwagon" very easily and I must have at least 5 years of tracking the general population before I will even consider it.

Last case and point... the flu shot has been causing childern to have hallucinations and personality issues within days of getting the shot.

I gotta find that article.

That and the fact that the flu shot does not cover all flu's. It is made up to combat the type of flu that scientists think will be most prevelant that year.

The HPV shot is the same. it does not cover all HPV variants.

You know what health care practitioners say-

"What's the quickest way to kill off grandma? The flu shot!"

This was all over the news today here in Austin . Perry has made the Gargasal Vax Mandatory . I see a few issues with this ( as it states in the article) #1 He issued an executive order ie Bypassed the legislature. I would NOT have such an issue with THAT SO much except for the fact that his former chief of staff is a lobbiest for Mereck . Now I know this is an important issue . But was it THAT important that it warranted an executive order ? I think not ? Why not do something like that for more important things ? I see shadiness all over this and unfortatly the message of the vax is goign ot get lost behind all that.

Now I have to admit im on the fence about it being mandatory . I see and have issues with both sides of it. I see the "religion factor" coming in on this . People are going to opt out of it.

So im on the fence about it. Even though if I had dd she would be getting it and im glad my sister got it . IF they had one for boys my boys would get it.

I see what your saying. The Flu shot is a great thing too though . for SOME not all . For kids like mine who have asthma , the flu shot is a must . If he doenst get it and gets the flu it could be dangerous. So im glad its there. BUT I also realize that's not the case for everyone.

My whole family gets the flu shot to help avoid my son getting it.

Wasn't there a whole other thread about this Perry guy? The worst governor in Texas or something like that?

I think what Gov. Perry, Texas has done is excellent. It should be done in all states. My daughter was diagnosed with HPV at 19 and had to have an envasive procedure called LEEP. Her fertility may be a problem when she wants children but was extremely close to having full blown cervical cancer.

She has had to have many more visits with the gyn because of her "history".

My GYN tests all women for HPV because it is a more sensitive test for Cervical cancer than the PAP. I get tested and I am in my late 50's.

I knew a girl at college who died at age 19 from cervical cancer and it scared the hell out of me and it was in 1967!

I remember giving my 3 kids the Hepatitis series of shots when they were in elem or middle school too.

Preventive medicine is what it's all about and if you have a daughter is has nothing to do with morality but with keeping girls safe and healthy.

I can't imagine anyone having a problem with this. It's no different than the Salk/Sabin vaccines for Polio, German measles etc. etc.

Boy, I sure have mixed feelings about this one! I started the HPV thread because I strongly believe all young girls should get it and I couldn't be happier that it will be required in Texas. My DIL had two LEEP procedures after she was diagnosed and still had to have a hysterectomy at 27 due to cervical Cancer from HPV. The daughter of my very, very close friends had LEEP procedures done in her teens and managed to save her cervix/uterus but her first pregnancy ended in a very premature infant that lived just a few days. Her second pregnancy was exactly the same, except she was able to carry the baby a few weeks longer and she survived. No more children for this young lady, though, and these problems were due to the LEEP treatments.

But I have HUGE trust issues with Rick Perry. He is the governor who cut children's Medicaid in Texas by tens of thousands and left millions in matching federal funds on the table. He has not been a good governor for teachers, children, the working poor, or even the middle and upper middle classes. He literally STOLE designated funds that belonged to the state park fund and used them for his own programs. Part of these were monies that people paid voluntarily by purchasing a State Parks and Wildlife license plate. But even Rick Perry must have realized that a series of 3 shots at $165 each would be a tremendous burden on poor families, especially if they had more than one daughter. The only way these people would get their girls vaccinated would be thru a free or low-cost program. I was prepared to pay the whole $1980 to have my 4 granddaughters vaccinated if their parents' insurance plans would not cover it because I know my kids and they would have just kept putting it off "until they're older" or "when we get the money". None of them believe there is the slightest chance of THEIR daughter having sex at the age of 15 or 16. HA! Can you say "living in a fool's paradise"?

The morality issue that I see here is a company who is lobbying hard to have this vaccine made mandatory before complete testing is done.

Carlene, I fully support parents making informed choices for their children. It's a shame that it has to be made mandatory for all for those parents who choose it to be able to afford it.

My DH is part of the Pharmaceutical industry so my take on these things and his medical degree influences what we do medically. I also get flu shots annually and recently got a Pneumonia shot. He is a very conservative guy and he didn't permit many things that are now routine when I was pregnant.

Apparently, if your daughter isn't sexually active until after age 21 there is less of a chance of HPV according to some GYN's. In the world we live in today I think that most kids will be sexually active prior to that age. I was... STD's are also on the rise and many girls have herpes without any symptoms and are exposed to this even with the use of condoms and safe sex practices.

My oldest daughter never tested positively for HPV yet I did a few years ago even though I have been married for 36 years to the same man! I had to have a few very invasive cervical tests too 5 years ago but I was okay. It can scare the shit out of you when your PAP is "abnormal".

Carlene, I am sorry about your daughter and her friend. It seems that now they don't do the LEEP procedure for HPV because of the potential of fertility problems.

Every one of my manicurists, hairdressers etc. have all been exposed and talk about HPV and the various treatments. Lots of my friends daughters also were exposed but never said anything to me until I told them about my daughter.

It's really wonderful to have something like this available for our pre teens.

Carlene,

I don't know enough about Texas politics to know all the other decisions that the Gov. has made that were not good decisions. I hear you though...

I had a neighbor that called me after a mailing that I did for Leukemia. She told me ( sort of yelled at me) that she supports nothing if they test on animals. I had to restrain myself and not tell her that I hoped she never developed any diseases of the heart, liver, cancer etc that were able to be treated thanks to animal testing of new drugs from the pharmaceutical industry. BTW, Pizer is laying off many thousands of workers due to poor clinical trials of a drug recently and was supposed to save the company now that Lipitor's patent is over and everyone else can make it.

Off topic but generics are not really the same as "name brand" drugs in every instance. You are paying for compounding the ingredients in a specific order, processing conditions etc. etc. There really are many other reasons to have a doctor specify no substitutions for certain drugs.

I gotta shut up because this is a heated topic and I have an insiders view since I know all about NDA's and the FDA and clinical trials.

I promise not to say anything more except that I applaud anyone who takes control of their daughter's future health and well being.

Oddly enough, the only generic my doctor has NOT allowed is the one for my thyroid meds (I take Synthroid).

Our insurance companies make it financially unreasonable in many cases to purchase "name brand" drugs, or more of us would, I'm sure. When your choice is $75 for the "real thing" and $5 for the generic, it's pretty hard to justify NOT choosing the generic.

Drug reps give HUGE freebies to doctors and their staff - everything from trips to lunches, gift cards, etc. and the public, in the end, pays for them. When my son was between jobs and working at TGI Friday's he had a regular customer (drug rep) who purchased $300 in take out (give away) food every single week for her clients.

I agree with you. I too have mixed feelings. The way Perry went about things seems kind of shady to me and I think that is going to cloud the good in this . I have a feeling more shadiness might come out about this in the long run.

I personally do not care for Perry myself.

I took my 15 yr old sister to get the Vaccine and get on the pill and my parents do NOT KNOW YET ! however, I was a single teen mom ( age 16 when i had my son ) and when my 15 yr old sister comes to me and says " I want to get one the pill because I am thinking about having sex with my boyfriend " I was not about to tell her no . She said she could not approach the subject with my parents and shame on them for not changing their "approach" on sex with my sister. I also got my sister the HPV Vax. She was the first one at the PP clinic I took her to to get it. I personally shelled out the $175 x3 of my own money to get it for her.

NOW Since all this has come up ( She's over the age) But my mom wants her to get the shot. I Told my sister she's going to have to tell my mom about the shot and the pill .

I have MULITIPLE Friends who have had LEEP Procedures, one friend who is infertile and and basically was told by her doc to sit and wait for cervical cancer ( She's got family history on both sides) . I wasnt about to let my sister become sexually active and NOT get the shot .

I Have conservative friends who ripped me a new one for doing it but I do not care. I would do it again .

I use to work for docs offices and hospitals. When i worked for a family practice office we had lunch catered EVERYDAY by the drug reps . Im talking expensive resturants too . For over 50 people. They woudl give the docs trips to Dallas Cowboy games, San Antonio Spurs, NASCAR ect...

its CRAP. that is one of the reasons why the drugs are so expensive. Its ridicoulous the way the drug reps "Hussle" Themselves for the docs. That the only way i describe it .

I don't blame you at all, Mindy. I think you can see that your sister isn't going to "learn" from your mistake, or from your mom's. Neither is anyone else's sister, daughter, granddaughter, etc. Setting a good example doesn't cut it, and neither does being a horrible warning (as the saying goes). All 15 year olds are ten feet tall and bullet proof!

You might take a lot of flack from your mom when she finds out what you did. Tell her, if your sister is old enough to ask for BC, she's old enough to NEED it.

Thank you Carlene . I actually see my sister learning by my mistake. She asked me for the pill. She was protected before she did it. SO She's one step up on me for that. My parents did not make it easy for me to talk to them about sex. They said " DONT DO IT DONT DO IT , its WRONG " Then every now and then would say ' Do you need to be on the pill ? " Why in the HELL would i tell you yes when you made it CLEAR that its TOTALLY wrong in ur eyes. They have not changed the way they do things, they told my sister the SAME THING . THAT Makes me angry . and i will NOT Sit back and allow it to happen if it doesnt have to. Im sure i'll catch flack but like i said I dont really care. Logically how can A mom get mad for someone basically trying to protect their daughter. I just hope she see's it that way . I did tell my sister if your old enough to have sex your old enough to tell mom that your on the pill at least. She agreed. She's going to tell her son and I agreed to be there with her. now telling my DAD that might not happen LOL

You are right too Carlene, anyone that thinks " my dd wont do it " its nuts. From what my sister tells me they ALL are doing it and let me tell you they ALL Talk about it . Thinking " I raised them right they will make the right decision " as my mom thinks , its a dangerous mistake .

My daughters aren't getting it. I don't trust new vaccines and I don't expect them to be sexually active before they get married. If, however, they choose to do so after they leave the care of our home, they will be able to make their own decision about the vaccine.

And before anyone jumps all over me about "you don't know what your kids are going to do when they're not with you", we homeschool and plan to do so through high school. We are a very open, honest family, and have had very frank, open communication about sex with our oldest daughter (the youngest is yet too young to discuss it). I don't foresee that changing.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
